Virginia City
Storey County, Nevada
The 19th century mining boom turned Virginia City into the most important settlement between Denver and San Francisco. Virginia City’s Chinatown numbered over 1,500 at its height in the early 1870s and was one of the 19th century’s largest Asian Pacific American communities in North America. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Virginia City one of the nation’s top 12 distinctive destinations in 2009.
A walk along the streets of historic Virginia City.
Highlights: Beyond some empty lots, not much remains of Virginia City’s Chinatown today. Stop by the friendly folks at Piper’s Opera House in town to talk to locals who may be able to share more about the Chinese American community of Virginia City.
