1990.077.001 Coat Long child's coat made from red damask silk with white satin trim. The fabric has roses woven in. The coat is unlined, very thin, and opens on the side with 10 frog closures-6 on the side and 4 by the collar. The coat tapers, measuring 15" at the chest, 17" at the waist, and 18" from the hip down. it is 41.5" long. The sleeves taper from 5.5" to 5" to 4.5" at the wrist, and are 16" long.

1990.094.001 Banner Loops along the top and sides to hang from a rod. Cream colored background with painted designs going vertically down the banner. Begins with a blue flower motif, followed by blue and orange horizontal stripes, followed by a warrior dressed in green and purple holding a banner aloft at the base of a home on a hill. This is followed by a warrior dressed in green and orange with a dragon on his helmet, riding on a black horse. The bottom is a warrior dressed in green and yellow on a brown horse. 20 feet long.

1990.097.093 Banner Dark blue silk background with white, blue, orange, and gold flowers embroidered on. There are two birds and two gold tassels embroidered on the bottom right corner. Heavy use of gold thread and there are many loose gold threads. Border is red silk, but it has heavily faded and the upper corners are shredding. The stitching is clearly visible.

1990.097.095 Banner Red silk banner. Top border in a red and green flower patterned fabric-thin material that is used for the backing as well. The next is an attached topper embroidered with butterflies and flowers and has attached mirror like studs. The border is black silk with pink and yellow piping. The main section has a lion (?) embroidered in the center, surrounded by embroidered flowers and more mirror like studs. The lion has beads for eyes.

1990.103 Coin French Indochinese coin for use as a Hmong/Mien belt buckle on a jacket Heavy silver coin with grooved edges, on one side imprinted in French "Indo-Chine Francaise . Titre 0.900 Poids 27 GR" around the outside and "Piastre de Commerce" in the middle surrounded by a wreath with a bow at the bottom; on the other side in French "Republique Francaise, 1909" around the outside with the female figure of Liberty dressed in a robe sitting with he arm resting on a desk, wearing a star shaped headdress and holding an obelisk on her knee, on the left appear to be sheaves of wheat and on the right an anchor. Information from donor states that this is 92.5% silver.
1991.001.001 Doll a. Warrior: Orange patterned brocade jacket and pants. 1/2 black mustache. Gosho (oyster shell mixture) head and hands, painted. White cord around wrists. Furry foot covering. Quiver of arrows on back, sword on cord. Armor is panels of lacquer, metal and laced fabric in orange, brown and white. White silk twisted cloth around his waist. Shoulder armor tied across back with orange fringed cord tied with gold cord. b. Horse: white with grey dot, white mane and tail, orange halter with gold cord and medallion of white cord. Orange fringed tassles. Lacquer saddle with gold flowers, blue & white cord, leather underpiece, leather panniers c. Helmet: Black lacquer with gold medallion and horns, orange lacing, back has metal medallion with orange cord. d. Panniers: on both sides with patterned brocade in rust, yellow, black and white. e. 2 black lacquer stirrups with gold flower design, hung on leather strap with Asano crest design. f. Sword which goes in scabbard. Metal with hilt of patterned gold metal. Handle wrapped with purple cord. g. Short sword in metal scabbard attached under left arm. h. Lance with long wooden handle. Decorated gold and black.
1991.001.002 Doll a. Japanese Boy's Day doll of a samurai wearing traditional Japanese armor. Head of gosho with hair upswept by tied white cords. Under armor is blk and gold brocade fabric jacket & trousers. Lower legs covered with purple & gold brocade fabric. Lacquered shin guards fastened to legs by B/W braided cords wrapped around legs at the ankles & below the knees. Brown & gold tabi on feet Sandals fastened to feet & ankles by wht cords. Chest, back, front & back legs protected by overlapping small lacquered plates bound together w/braided cords In front, the plates are fastened to metal breast plate. Orange braided cords fasten his jacket of the wrists. Around the waist is a sash of wht silk the end of which is twisted & tucked into the top of the sash. The hands are also made of gosho, painted brown, & have spots of grey & dk. blue. b. carries a baby, small doll's head wrapped in orange silk brocade fabric tied in middle w/ B/W braided cord. c. carries a curved sword (L:5-1/8") w/handle (L:1-5/8") wrapped w/green thread w/ gilded hilt d. sword is in a scabbard (L:4-1/4") which has a binding of green thread (L:1-1/2") over which are two metal fasteners by which the sword is suspended on a cord over the shoulder.
1991.001.003 Doll a. Chinese doll head made of a clay compound painted a pinkish complexion. The features are molded into the head then painted. Painted-on eyebrows. Head mounted on a wire which extends 1-7/8" below the neck. Male. Painted blk hair or a shell cap over which fits a hat made of painted paper-mache. At nape of neck are two characters (Wen Ho) probably the manufacturers name. b. Hat (H:1-1/2") w/rounded front portion from which rises a back rounded peak They are painted blue. Front of the lower & back sections both have floral motifs in bas relief painted gold to resemble metal ornamentation w/underlying patches of fabric, green & magenta. There are also simulated metal strapping running from the side up over the crown of the hat & also from the sides over the junction of the lower & higher sections of the hat. At the rear of the hat two paddle-like elements are fastened by wire. They extend out ea. side of hat broad surface forward. Front surface has a gold painted relief pattern w/ a central green painted are. The back of the paddle shaped pieces is painted red Made for export, popular in England

1991.003.001 Painting Scroll painting, silk on paper, linen, scroll mounted. Top has a narrow wooden rod, bottom is rolled w/ a heavier blk rod w/knobs. Painting may be unfinished Depicts a man seated w/a woman on his rt and a woman on his left. He is wear- ing a blue outerrobe w/the crane insignia indicating 1st rank civil official & a long bead necklace. Underrobe is partially decorated or damaged and is a lighter blue, green and red. The women are dressed in identical plain dark blue outerrobes and a lighter blue underrobe. He is wearing an official's hat, black and red with finnial; women are wearing a snug fitting black cap or hair ornament. They are all seated on tiger robes (the tigers' nose & whiskers are peaking out from under their robes) & ornate chairs. A formal side table is in the background, two vases containing branches are on table, also a small bowl w/utensil & a red container, & a stack of books. They appear to be seated on a stage w/a drawn curtain that is tied back (pink & green). Depicting mid-18th c. official? See Chinese Dress, by Verity Wilson, for costume (41-42)
1991.003.002 Painting Scroll Painting, silk on paper, linen, scroll mounted. Long narrow rod on top & heavier round rod on bottom with one knob missing on the left side. Depicts a man wearing the crane insignia on the chest of his robe indicating he is a 1st rank civil official (about 1700). His outerrobe is predominantly blue in color. His three companions are women (or eunuchs?), one seated to his right and two seated to his left, he is also seated. Companions are identically dressed in robes depicting a dragon. Colors are light blue, brown, dark green, rust, red and white. All four are seated on tiger skin robes showing clawed feet & tails. All four are wearing similar hats of brown & red with a finnial in the middle, the very top is red. The 3 women also have identical blk bands at the base of the hat w/ a white floral design. They are seated on a stage. The background color is gold and the upper part of the stage is a folded fabric of green & red, with a design of octagons and squares (green & gold). 1991.003.003 Lantern Blk painted wood carved candle lantern with green painted silk panels. Two pieces, the top (a) contains the silk panels and (b) is the base pedestal. The candle would sit on the base (b) and shine through the painted silk panels (a) (a) The candle lantern is eight sided w/four sides measuring 3-1/2" (9 cm) and four measuring 1-3/4" (4-1/2" cm). The lantern's shape is defined by black painted wood carved fretwork on the top aorund hte silk midsection & around the base of this piece. This piece has an open top nad bottom w/4 small hooks at the top. There is green silk behind all hte fretwork. The 4 largest panels ea. have a landscape scene painted on them. These panels are set inside an outer framewrok with slender vertical columns. (b) The base piece is comprised of three sections 1. The flat top piece is constructed to hold (a). There is a small hole in the center of this section where the candle may rest. 2. A carved spindle set into a base 3. The base consists of two layers of fretwork the bottom of which flares out & sits on small feet.
1991.003.004 Lantern Blk painted wood carved candle lantern w/orange painted silk panels. 2 pieces The top (a) contains the silk panels & (b) is the base pedestal. The candle would sit on the base (b) & shine through the painted silk panels (a) (a) The candle lantern is eight sided w/4 sides measuring 3-1/2" (9 cm) & four measuring 1-3/4" (4-1/2 cm). The lantern's shape is defined by blk painted wood carved fretwork on the top, around the silk midsection, & around the base of this piece. The piece has an open top & bottom. There is orange silk behind most of the fretwork (there may have originally been silk behind all the fret work). The 4 largest panels ea. have a painting of a different bird in a tree branch. These panels are set inside an outer framework w/slender vertical columns. (b) The base pc. is comprised of 3 sections: 1. The flat top pc is constructed to hold (a). There is a small hole in the ctr of this section where the candle may rest 2. A carved spindle set into a base 3. The base consists of 2 layers of fretwork, the bottom of which flares out and sits on small feet. DAMAGE: Silk panels are coming unglued, torn & have black stains.Some of the woodwork has lighter stains, front fretwork of the crane panel is broken
1991.003.005 Set, flatware Mans eating kit made of wood overlaid w/green colored shark-skin. The case is made up of a knife, 2 two-tined forks, 2 spoons, and 3 chopsticks. Case (a) is 11-3/4" long, 5-3/4" bottom circum, 6-5/8" top circum. Knife (b) is 9-1/4" long. The handle is made of bone & is 5" long. The blade is 4-3/8" long made of steel & is grooved. The top of the knife holds a brass template for the insertion of the other eating utensils. Each fork (c) & (d) is 9-5/8" long w/ blk painted wood handles 4-7/8" long w/a metal knob at the top. Ea. metal tine is 3-1/2" long. Connecting the tines are intersecting circles 2-1/2" up from the bottom. Each spoon (e) & (f) is 8" long w/ the same wood handle, L: 4-5/8" a metal knob is on the ends. The scoop section is made of metal. The three chopsticks (g), (h), & (i) are made of bone and are 9-7/8" long. One chopstick is missing from this set. The bottom of the case (j) has a brass cap 3" wide. A black cotton cord goes through eyelets up the length of the kit through another set of eyelet on a 1" brass top cap (k). This top cap can be used as a cup. The cotton cord can be tied onto the belt to suspend the personal eating kit.
1991.003.009 Scroll Manila colored scroll with black and off-white tomb rubbing on most of the scroll which is rolled on the top with a long narrow piece of wood and on the bottom w/ a much heavier and thicker round, black rod. The picture is of one elderly man w/long beard and fingernails walking w/a cane, in traditional dress. Bamboo leaves (grasses & rocks) in the foreground & background. There are 5 lines of Chinese characters (1 line) of writing in the lower right hand corner. The upper right hand corner has 2 lines and the lower left hand corner has a chop containing Chinese characters, perhaps the artist's signa- ture. The actual rubbing is on manila colored paper which appears to have fabric glued on the sides to frame it or provide a more substantial backing. Stone rubbing dampened paper pressed onto tomb stone and dried, ink is spread on raised surfaces with brush (Things Chinese 220).
1991.003.010 Puppet, shadow Shadow puppet of a man dressed in a long full sleeved top and long full pants. The costume is mostly black with some yellow and green. There is little carving on the costume. The puppet is made of leather. The face is shown in profile with the features cut-out. Black fringed bangs are seen under the headdress. The headdress is red, green, and yellow with ball shapes over the crown. There are two yellow streamers with green circles coming out of the top back. One edge of each streamers has a jagged edge. A central bamboo stick and rod is attached at the neck and supports the puppet There are two other bamboo and rod sticks that attach to the hands and allow the arms to move at the elbow and shoulders. The legs are jointed at the hip and knees and also move. The platform shoes are yellow and black.
1991.003.011 Puppet, shadow Shadow puppet of a bearded man dressed in a black, red, yellow and green costume. The puppet is made of thin, translucent leather. Cut-out designs are all over the costume, face and hat. There is a central bamboo stick and rod attached at the neck and it supports the puppet. There are two other rod and bamboo sticks that attach to the hands and allow the arms to move at the elbow and shoulder. The legs are jointed at the hip and knees and also move. The costume has long sleeves and long full pants and has a cut-out face pictured in the middle. The numerous detailed carvings mean this man was probably an important person. The profiled face and cut-out features indicate this man to be an aristocratic and righteous individual. The hat has a flower cut-out in the front with a ball shape above and two streamers coming out of the back. The flags are triangular in shape. 1991.003.012 Set, flatware Eating kit made of wood holding two chopsticks and a knife. The kit (a) is 9" long and has a 1-11/16" metal band that has a template for one knife and 3 chopsticks. We have only 2 of the 3 chopsticks. On the back of the brass band is a ring enabling the user to attach this kit to a belt. The kit is divided into 3 parts separated by metal horizontal bands. Ea. section has 3 ivory inlay carvings 6/10 cm x 1-3/10 cm going down the front. The third inlay from the top is missing. The knife (b) is 11-1/8" long. The knife handle is made of wood and is 5" long The top of the knife has a metal fitting with bats engraved on it. The blade is 6" long made of steel and grooved. The two chopsticks (c) & (d) are 9-5/8" long made of bone. Each one has a carved top notch 5/8" long. DAMAGE: Knife is in poor shape; Right rear edge vener of kit is coming off. Inside knife holder has active corrosion.

Silk, multi-colored heavily embroidered designs on both sides, various stitch styles are applied, mostly knots with gold outline couched thread. Some of the motifs are stuffed to create a 3-dimensional effect. Some of the images are temples, dragons of the clouds?, an egg representing the yin and yang. b. The fan is made up of 9 bamboo ribs which represents a man's fan. The two outer ribs are of carved bird motifs and painted black on the outer sides the inner 7 ribs are of natural bamboo. The fan has applied beige paper w/ a gold outer trim, the painted motif is various bird scenes showing eight different birds, 1 on ea. panel. Far left panel is of a wht goose in water w/Chinese characters at the top, The 2nd panel is a bird in pine tree, 3rd are of two water fowl birds in water, 4th is a B/W bird in a pomagrant tree, 5th a white long legged bird in a tree, 6th panel is two white birds in water, 7th panel is of 2 yellow birds on a tree branch, 8th panel is of 4 birds on and above wood fencing or piers. Opposite side of the fan has blk painted calligraphy w/ gold and copper paint splatterings throughout. This fan is held together with a metal pin at the base. Fan spread 19" (48-1/4 cm).
1991.003.015 Card, Flash 281 flash cards w/ Chinese characters painted in black on yellowing card stock All but 16 cards have the romanized version of the character and the English version written in turquoise blue ink on the back of the cards. Two paper clips have left rust stains on some cards. Probably used by Mr. Dean while learning Chinese.
1991.004 Robe Full length robe probably made for tourist trade or export. Fold over front w/ ties under rt. armpit, side slits on both sides from bottom to 4" below armpit Royal blue silk satin w/large embroidered design. On front & back panels main motif is a monkey in a tree plucking fruit. A small container is suspended from a tree branch under the monkey. Same design embroidered on each sleeve. There is a border motif of the Greek key pattern alternating w/dragons. In the center bottom of the front & back panel borders is a flaming pearl. The embro- idery is wht silk w/gold thread outlines, green colored veins in the leaves. The monkeys are brown w/pink faces & under tails w/lt. blue chests, grey hands & feet. The lining is pink silk satin. Lining of back panel has blk peonies, stems & leaves embroidered. Lining of the front panel has a 26" high embroid- ered lady carrying an open parasol that has a purple handle, blk cover w/gold thread design & lt. blue lining w/overlapping blue hexazgonal patterns w/yellw asterisk-like under pattern. Lady is wearing bright blue kimono w/floral motif w/a rust, purple, & wht obi. She carries a folded fan in rt. hand & wears geta w/ blue toe thongs. A separate side panel down the rt. has pink lining w/black embroidered peonies & leaves. Neck has wht silk border 4-3/4" wide w/lt blue trim & blk embroidered floral patterns outlined w/gold thread. Inside neck has W: 4-1/2" band of offwht silk w/narrow yellow tape on inner edge & blk embroid
1991.006.001 Mask Chinese papier mache mask crafted by Yangshuo master mask maker. Made for a child in the shape of a tiger (a tiger's ferocity scares away evil spirits) rests on top of the head. The figure of a bat, symbol of happiness & longevity is painted on the tiger's forehead with wire for antennae. Resting on top of the tiger's head is a bird with a long beak and circular paper wings attached with wires. The tiger's tongue is a separate piece attached by string to the mask. A circular piece of bamboo forms the base of the mask. Faded red rope strands are pushed through two holes at the top of the mask splitting center and repeated on the lower half. The lower left strand is missing. There is a loop of rope at the top for hanging. A small strand is also connected under the tiger's nose with wire. Colors include red, yellow, blue, black, pink, green and white with a thick use of gold paint. Small circles of white styrofoam are glued over lower half of mask. DAMAGE: some rope missing, pieces of styrafoam
1991.006.002 Bead Strand of Chinese Buddhist prayer beads carved from fruit pits. Each of the 20 beads is individually carved, 18 of them are faces each unique, one is an entire figure of a Buddha and one is decorative. A green rope is used to string the beads vertically from under the chin and through the top of the head. The decorative bead and Buddhist bead are at opposite ends with eight beads on each side. Both ends of the rope go through the Buddha bead and are knotted, leaving a short length of rope. Pits are light brown in color. All faces include eyes, ears, mouth and nose. DAMAGE; general wear from use, some splitting at either ends of beads where rope runs.
1991.007 Kimono Taisho Period (1912-26) married woman's kimono-kosode style. Machine woven silk, kasuri patterning (ikat). For winter use. Predominantly black, blue, and grey. Pattern is large and is of parts of a water wheel and splashing water. Wheel is blue, water is gray and brown, background is black. Some white bast- ing threads are left on sleeves. Lining of bottom 18", inside of cuffs, and inside edges of front opening from kimono bottom to just above collar bottom is chartreuse silk. Remaining lining is white silk. DAMAGE: extensive minor damage. Bottom 11" of kimono are stained with chartreuse, probably the result of the lining bleeding through. Proper right back has white horizontal staining. Proper left back near center seam has 4 small holes in a square patter. Lining is also stained and worn. Overall garment has occassional stains, holes, or worn spots. NOTE: When displayed or loaned, must state that it was donated in honor of the Directorship of Kit Freudenberg 1983-1991
1991.008 Apron Apron/ Cape The body of the garment is adorned with patches of cross stiched embroidery and applique patterns of symetrical shapes with many lobes and curlicues. It is worn for weddings and other special occasions. It can be worn either as a cape or apron and is embellished with silver buttons, coins, dangles and chains.
1991.009 Can, Food-storage A one pound can of vacuum packed icy point salmon. The can is dark blue, with a picture of a leaping salmon on the front, with a background of icy glaciers. The words "ICY POINT SALMON" encircle the salmon and glaciers on a yellow background. The place of processing and distribution are printed on the right of the logo. A yellow rectangualr background as follows: Icy Point Selected Salmon (Gorbuscha) Packed in Alaska by Alaska Pacific Salmon Corporation, Skinner & Eddy Corporation, Seattle, USA. Distributors, Copyright 1930." On the left of the logo is an advertisement with the Good Housekeeping Magazine seal of approval and an offer to write for a booklet of recipes for preparing the salmon.

Hat is held under chin with red ribbon which goes through crown of hat. The hat is circular but worn in a half circle shape with pointed ends front and back, hiding the face.
1991.012.002 Hat Chinese bamboo woven hat. Natural colored hat composed of two layers of open hexagonal weaving with a layer of palm leaves held firmly in between. The crown is capped with a lighter colored bamboo woven into the hexagonal weave. There is a stiff bamboo rim lashed on the bottom edge. Where the bamboo rim overlaps itself it is wrapped closely with thin strips of bamboo. The hat is circular and dome shaped with a smaller dome at the top. There are Chinese characters printed on pink paper woven into the inside of the hat. Natural straw hat worn by Sado Island dancers. 1991.013 Kimono White cotton Yukata kimono and belt with blue print pattern. (a) The long robe opens in the front and closes with the belt (b). The pattern includes chrysanthemums, iris, bush cloves, bamboo, willow, a flowing stream and a house. The pattern runs up and down, it first mirrors itself and then repeats. The robe is machine sewn and has a tag at the neck: Made in Japan. There are several spots around the neck where the blue has run into the white probably due to water or washing. The yukata is used as a summer kimono or as a bath- robe. (b) The belt is made of the same fabric and is double thickness. It has two pieces sewn together to get the desired length. The blue has run into the white in some places.
1991.014 Hat Man's cotton hat made of navy cotton with detailing in brown and beige batik and a piece of turquoise silk. This hat fits snugly on the head and is made up of 3 main pieces. Two pieces form around the side of the head and then one piece is inset in between. There are two strips of sword patterned (Kris) batik that are sewn on where the pieces meet. These batik pieces start at the back and run to the front cross over and then go towards the back. At the back in the middle is a batik bow. The inset middle has a batik design in brown and off white, near the front of the head. There are two pleated pieces that are sewn on to the front part of the hat. There are 17 small pleats on each side of these pieces. These pleated pieces are navy cotton with a small amount of batik in brown, black and off white. There is a small triangular batik piece that hangs down in the middle front. The hat is lined with heavy black cotton There is a white tag with red lettering on the inside.
1991.015.001 Cloth Fragment Long pink rectangualr piece of jusi cloth with fringe on both ends decorated with darker pink flower and leaves stamp nad green flower stamp all over the fabric. The pink jusi cloth has some lines of dark fibers. Jusi cloth is made from banana fibers which are taken out of the stock of the banana plant. It is made mainly in Iloilo and some in Malabon and Rizal. There is some spotting of dye and fraying of fabric.
1991.016.001 Cloth Fragment Long yellow rectangular piece of jusi cloth with fringe on both ends decorated with a rose-like flower stamp all over the fabric. The rose-like flower is pink with green leaves and green flower bud. The yellow jusi cloth has some lines of darker fibers. Jusi cloth is made from banana fibers which are taken out of the stalk of the banana plant. It is made mainly in Iloilo and some in Malabon and Rizal.
1991.017.001 Box Betel Box Set Round brass bowl (Diam: 10-3/4" (27-1/2 cm) H: 3-3/4" (9-1/2 cm)) w/4 betel containers. Bowl (a) has 1" (2-1/2 cm) base & cut out pattern near base & near rim. About 10 small holes in bottom of bowl probably due to corrosion. Bowl made to hold 4 containers & probably used in the home to serve guests.(b)Round betel container w/top & bottom. (Broken) hinge is held together by wire. Decorative design, circlular w/8-pt. star in middle, at top around sm nob-like handle. Incised lined pattern frieze. Corrosion on inside & 2 sm holes on top. (c) Similar to (a), but knob & design at top are larger. Fewer lines going up & down & spaced farther aprt. Corrosion on inside & 1 sm hole in bottom. Hinge held together by wire. (d)Similar in shape & size. Design at top has 7 circles & circles around the sm knob. Inside of top is corroded. Bottom: 4 sm & 1 lg hole. Hinge held together by wire. (e)Sim to c in shape & design. Design sim to (c) w/circles going round the ctr except w/6 circles. Knob missing. Inside top w/corrosion. Hing broken held together w/wire, doesn't fully open. Betel boxes usually come in sets of 4 to accommodate the 4 ingredients of the betel chew: areca nut (bunga), fresh peper leaves (buyo), lime powder (apug) & damp tobacco leaves. 1991.017.002 Box Circular brass betel box. This brass box is 2-3/4" (7 cm) in diameter and 2" (5 cm) high. The box is scalloped all around the outside, 12 scallops. Box has top and bottom & is hinged though the hinge is broken & held together by a wire. There is a stylized flower on the top of the box w/12 petals. Inside is corroded and has what looks like lime powder encrusted on it. There is one hole in the bottom part of the box. This may have been part of a set of 4 betel boxes at one time. 1991.018.001 Fan Man's fan case of red silk satin w/appliqued lotus flower. There are three lotus blossoms w/trailing vines connecting them vertically. Both sides of fan are exactly the same. The bottom flowers are ivory w/purple tips & gold bud base. The middle lotus blossoms are pink w/ivory tips and gold bud base. The top blossoms are ivory w/blue tips, the bud base is purple. Each blossom is connected w/green vines and two-toned green leaves at the top of the fan case is a blue & ivory cloud-like figure (?) connected to the fan case is a gold woven handle 13-1/2" long. At each end of the handle are pink hand blown glass beads. Holding the beads in place are white, navy blue, and aqua colored threads. The base of the fan case and the inner lining at the opening are of royal blue silk satin. The fan is made up nine bamboo spines which are painted tan and lacquered. The paint has been chipped at the bottom ends, one side of the fan is of Chinese calligraphy characters. The other side is of painted mountains, trees, and calligraphy characters. At one end of the fan is a name and address written in ink (previous owner?): Mrs. H.A. Wilbur, 291 Marengo Ave., Pasadena, Calif.
1991.019.001 Fan Folding fan with black lacquer fram and gold paper fan painted with orange & white plum blossoms. The lacquer frame is held together with a round silver metal fastener. The gold fan has cracked finish where the yellow color of the paper shows. The branches of the plum blossom are painted gray black. The blossoms are either orange or white iwth a green center and yellow stamen. The branches also have orange or white unopened buds. White thread attaches the fan to the frame on the two outer spokes. Same design is on both sides.
1991.020 Fan Round Japanese Fan with a natural color bamboo frame and off white paper back ground with a blue iris and crane fly design. The iris is blue with yellow accents and green leaves. There is one blue unopened bud. A crane fly with a blue body, gray appendages, and light green wings rests on one leaf. There are Japanese characters written on the left hand corner in black and red. A green thread is woven at the bottom of the paper through the spokes, with the ends dangling on both ends. The fan is edged in a natural color paper binding. The paper is torn at the bottom and the top of the fan.

1991.022 Fan Square shaped fan with natural color bamboo frame and blue paper fan with a cutout design. The handle of the frame is painted a light brown color. The blue paper fan has a wavy cutout design going across the bottom and another design cutout near the top. There are Japanese characters written on the back in black ink on the off white background. The fan is edged in silver binding. Dark blue paper tabks stabilize the edge where the frame meets the paper. A white thread is woven near the bottom of the paper through the spokes and is sandwiched between the two pieces of paper. DAMAGE: The paper is torn by one tab and on the top binding edge
1991.023 Fan Tulip shaped woven palm fan with a bamboo loop handle. The front of the fan is embroidered with blue nad orange raffia roses, with green raffia leaves. The fan is edged with orange and natural colored palm fibered binding machine sewn on. The front palm fabric alternates 3 wide with 2 narrow warp threads and the back of the fan is made of plain ordinary weave palm fabric. There appears to be cardboard sandwiched between the front and back palm fabrics to lend stiffness to the fan.
1991.024.001 Statue 18th/19th c. standing bronze Buddha. Lost wax cast in the round. Wears flower patterned uttarasanga covering. With three section pyramidal crown, and on a four section pedestal base. Buddha gilded overall and the base w/traces of red and black pigment. Arms are raised from the elbows, hands raised, palms outward in the abhaya mudra, or calming position. In the palms are small floral shaped objects. On the shoulders and above the ears are flamelike projections. Similar flame like patterns emanate from both sides of a sash dangling from the waist. The toes of the sandles on the feet are turned up. The chest is covered by an elaborate (cast) ornamentation suspended from a wide necklace. The figrue appears cast in 3 sections: finial, main body, ped- estal & lower legs & feet. DAMAGE: On the (true) left side of base there is a 7/8" gap at the bottom possibly caused by faulty casting. Where the bottom of the flaring robe meets the tops of the legs there is a gap which has been filled with wax. Some of this wax is spilled down the legs. The donors name is written in red, possibly with felt marker diagonally across the lower back of the figure.
1991.024.002 Statue 19th c carved, gilded, stained wooden standing Buddha. Figure is carved in the round, wearing a flaring robe inset with mirrors. A tightly curled usnisa, his face with a solemn expression his hand holding his flaring robe. The right hand is in the preaching mudra (position). The statue stands on a lotus base which is mounted on a black lacquered wooden base 18" high, 12" wide, & 10-7/8 deep. DAMAGE: Greyish encrustation between the feet and on upper surface of the lotus pedestal, also on the inner folds of the robe along the lower front border of the robe and along the lines of the body. Pedestal split between & below the feet. A split approx. 6" long running upward on the robe in the rear bhetween hte legs. Split about 1-1/2" long running upward between the legs at the bottom front of the robe. Back of the robe is scratched. Former owner's name written in red ink on the back. Another name written in red on rt, rear, lower portion of the cloak. Gilding worn off in places, some mirror decora- tions missing.
1991.025 Fan 28 ribbed, black folding paper fan with black bamboo frame, Chinese. The front of the fan has an iris plant and two flying insects painted in silver on the left half, and rows of silver calligraphy painted on the right side. A red "chop" on far right corner and near the middle of the fan, a tiny red box with a smaller silver box has been printed on the fan with an "X" scored upon the silver box showing the red ink beneath. The back of the fan has rows of silver calligraphy painted upon it with 4 large calligraphy letters in the middle. The artist's chop has been imprinted in red at the far right corner.

1991.026 Lute Round wood guitar-like fretted instrument w/short neck, known as yueh chin. Body of instrument is round, of lt brown wood which shows wear from strumming action. 11 bamboo frets attached to front of instrument. Strings attached to bottom front by a half-circle shaped pc of dark polished wood (rosewood). The same dark polished wood forms the rim and carved neck. Neck is carved w/slight curve and a scroll top. There is an inscription of Chinese characters written on a thin piece of paper or leather that's glued to the top of the neck. Four lt wood pegs to which the strings are attached, for purpose of tightening (tuning) them. 2 of 4 strings missing. Back of body is painted w/4 red Chinese characters which are slightly smeared. Neck slightly unglued from body. Round front of instrument has a lengthwise crack which appears to have been filled for repair. The yueh chin is a colorful soprano instrument with clear, pure timbre, suitable for orchestras and accompaniment. 1991.027 Doll Young girl & baby doll. This doll is 10-1/2" (26-1/2 cm) tall and the body is 1-1/2" (4 cm) in diameter, the head is 8" (20 cm) in circumference. Body made of straw and the head is soft probably stuffed with fabric. The doll has no arms. Wearing a short multi-colored cotton kimono jacket w/traditional Jpnese designs. It is also wearing a red and black design skirt. Head is attached by a very narrow neck and made of white silk. The eyes, eyebrows, and mouth are painted on. There is a stain on the face. The doll has a red scarf that covers the back half of the head. Some ravelled fabric comes from under the scarf for the doll's hair. The baby's head w/a scarf comes out of the kimono at the neck Possibly a Komori doll: young girl who is 12-16 yrs old & hired to take care of babies. Many of the girls have babies tied to their backs all day and sing songs to them. This custom comes from the belief that the baby's soul is young and can be easily frightened so he must be kept close to the body. 1991.028.001 Fan White folding paper fan with 38 bamboo ribs, and a red and black lacquer bamboo frame. A thin nylon woven string is strung through the base of the handle, and is tied together at its ends. A broad pink stripe, with 5 white circles, has been painted on the front of the fan, outlined with gold ink. The back of the fan has 1-1/2 rows of black calligraphy written on the left side of the fan. The name "Yamashita" is stamped on the paper along the left handle of the frame.
1991.029 Altarpiece Buddhist Altar Cloth. Triangular silk brocade gold background with medallions Principle medallions are green, orange, white and gold, and dark blue, orange, white and gold. There are star-shaped medallions in medium blue, olive green, white on gold. Between are single terra cotta colored flowers in circles outlined in white. Cloth is lined with off-white cotton muslin and there is a sleeve of muslin along the top of the triangle.
