1996.011 Basket with lid Basket with Lid (Kago) A: Round basket made of coiled reed bound with split bamboo, tapers slightly at bottom, ring shaped foot, recessed rim to accommodate lid. B: Round lid also made of coiled reed bound with split bamboo, short straight sides curve inward at top and a raised coiled disk shape forms the flat center of the lid; ochre colored cotton braided cord is tied in the center and passed through another braided cord tied to one side, center cord ends in knotted design, two jade beads and silk tassels which are worn so that the rolled newprints with Chinese characters shows through; another short cord is tied near the
1996.012.001 Parasol Paper Umbrella (Karakasa, specifically Bangasa rain umbrella) Purplish brown oiled? paper glued to bamboo (madake bamboo) spokes, black edging on paper, spokes are lacquered on outside and have orange tips, bamboo lever spokes inside are split so they fasten on either side of each spoke with a cotton string threaded through holes at the joints, web of white string is threaded through holes in the levers at three levels, dark bamboo handle rubbed bare in center, white plastic coil around lower handle and gold colored metal knob nailed to end of handle, one light blue and one yellow plasticized cloth wrapped around knob on top, tied with acqua colored braided cord. 1996.012.002 Framed Picture Paper flower picture in a standing frame A: Picture made of 8 dyed rice paper flowers and 6 buds in the shape of pink and purple sweet peas on two green vines, red square with white kanji created from fold paper in lower left corner, on paper card backing trimmed on edges with gold colored tape. B: Frame of dark wood with rounded corners at the top and curved feet with extensions on either side, includes matof gold and reddish brown brocade in a repeat, and an inner edge shallow dark wood frame which creates a shadow box for the picture, clear glass front C: Back insert is paper covered stiffener (foam core?), white on the inside and blue cloth on the outside, two brown plastic insets framed with gold paper on right side act as sliders for two wooden pegs which fit into slots in the frame, two stationary wooden pegs on left side; silver colored sticker has the name "Mitsukoshi" in black with circled kanji next to it in lower right hand corner (possibly the name of the store at which the picture was bought).
1996.012.003 Shoes (Zori) Pair of Zori Sandals (A,B) Orange, yellow, gold and green brocade covered soles and straps; the brocade is woven in designs of chrysanthemums, peach, cherry blossoms within lozenze shapes (tortoise design), it covers a padded strap that is connected on both sides near the back of the sandal and runs through a brocade loop attached near the front; the sandals are flat with a wedge shaped piece inserted between the inner sole and the bottom sole at the back; the soles are made of pressed cardboard and are stitched to the body of the sandal, two flaps are held in place with staples and a round red and white sticker with kanji is adhered to the bottom of each sandal. These sandals are a large size and would be worn by a woman on dressy occasions with kimono.
1996.012.004 Sandals Pair of Sandals (A,B) Finely layered and sewn straw insole, sides show layers of wrapped straw, lower in front and higher in the back, light blue leather sole with two flaps stapled down, ovoid shaped heel, possibly leather, nailed to back end of sole; straps consist of two tubes of pink velvet, one with a central white, black red piping, fastened at sides near the back and goes through a loop fastened at center nearer the front. Worn more casually, but nicely made.
1996.012.005 Tabi Socks Two Pairs of Tabi Socks A, B: Uppers are made of plain white cotton doubled and shaped so the big toe has a separate pocket, a seam up the front where the socks rises over the ankle, open at the back with 4 gold colored rounded metal tabs (the upper tab has two characters impressed on it) which fold under and pass through two rows of string threads on the other side of the back; the sole is made of a heavy white twill cotton on the bottom with a layer of white flannel cotton sewn to the sole on the inside. C, D: Identical to A and B except that they appear to have been worn more and have stains on the sole and uppers.
1996.012.006 Wrapping Cloth (Furoshiki) Furoshiki Wrapping Cloth Synthetic crepe fabric, hemmed on two sides, printed design has red background with white and pink squares in the configuration of a crossword puzzle, the white square contain blue and red images of cherry blossoms, drums, scrolls, money bags, etc.

1996.012.008 Wrapping Cloth (Furoshiki) Furoshiki Wrapping Cloth Light blue synthetic cloth, hemmed on two edges with printed design of pine branches in gradations of blue with pink tips in the center of each branch, design spreads across one corner with a smaller version above, in the opposite corner is a blue mon with a frontal view of a crane inside a circle.
1996.012.009 Sash Sash for securing Kimono Light pink synthetic cloth with a "popcorn" texture, sewn in half lengthwise and pleated together at the ends, 3 1/2" from the ends are double rows of red machine stitching.
1996.012.010 Obi Obi Informal sash with stripes of blue yellow and white, blue weft, stiffened cotton?, plain weave, obi is folded in half and stitched along one side, the unfinished ends are folded in, a beige paper label with black kanji is stuck to the inside of one end (possibly manufacturer or store).
1996.012.011 Obi Obi Single layer silk sash woven so that the central portion is stiffer than the ends which need to be tied, white diamond shape cherry blossoms show on the outside of the peachy pink background and on the wrong side the white warp threads show as the background with the flower motifs in pink, unfinished ends. Attached tag near one end says #15, Y 650.-- (yen) with some stamps in red and green kanji.
1996.012.012 Stiffener (Obi ita) Stiffener to be worn under an obi (Obi ita) Pin satin fabric with stamped motifs (3 silver--cherry blossom, kiri leaf, ivy leaf, 1 gold--plum blossom) sewn around the edges of two rounded rectangular pieces ofcardboard, the back board is cut down in the center to form a pocket and is decorated with gold and silver hash marks.
1996.012.013 Yukata Yukata (informal kimono) A: White cotton kimono with short sleeves rounded at the bottom corner open on inner side bottom, charcoal color, green and graduating blue overall design of bamboo stalks and leave, band shaped collar extends half way down front. Loop sewed inside back neck and a label "All Cotton, L, Japan" in english. B: Matching sash folded in half lengthwise and stitched. Attached to sleeve of yukata with basting stitch.
1996.012.014 Yukata Yukata (informal kimono) A: White cotton kimono, short sleeves with rounded corner bottom, not stitched to body on lower half of sleeve, dark blue repeating motifs of irises, balloon flowers, leaves, water and bridges, double layer (facing near back neckline), band shaped collar extends half way down front. B: Matching sash fold in half lengthwise and sewn.
1996.012.015 Kimono Kimono, Woman's Maroon colored silk? with woven segmented floral design and a resist dyed stencil (katazome) design of white, red, yellow and grey chrysanthemums with leaves extending the full length of the robe; medium length sleeves open next to the body and at the wrist; band style collar is folded in half lengthwise and extends half way down front; red habutae silk lining in upper half, rose colored silk lining in lower half and at sleeve edges.
1996.012.016 Obi Pre-tied Maru Obi Silk brocade with an all-over design of cranes, bamboo, plum blossoms, pine, peach, chrysanthemum in red, peach color, orange, green, black outlined and with a background of gold metallic thread; flat knot at back is created by folding the obi and stitching it into shape, the band that wraps around extends out one side and is doubled over and sewn together, pink satin lining; inside knot is stiff pad stitched in place and covered with white cotton and has ties extending out each side. Another white cotton tie extends out the side from the lower end of the bow.
1996.012.017 Obi Age Obi Age sash Red habutae silk sash with unfinished ends, white pattern of dots in the design of pine, bamboo and oblique lines is created by kanoko shibori (tying white silk with thread to create a resist pattern, then dipping it in red dye and removing the threads)
1996.012.018 Sash Red silk sash doubled lengthwise and sewn on long edge, ends are pleated and sewn, silk is lightweight, shiny and has lengthwise striated texture.
1996.012.019 Obi Jime Obi Jime - Kumihimo Cord Braided silk cord (kumihimo method) which is flattened and has orange threads on one half lengthwise and white on the other; ends with silk threads creating tassels which are tied with orange cotton thread.
1996.012.020 Jacket (Haori) Haori Jacket (worn over kimono) Long peachy pink jacket with medium length sleeves open near body, slightly rounded outer corner, band style collar extends to bottom of jacket, silk damask has a woven repeat design of game? boxes with pine branch on top, comma shaped petals in the shape of a flower with a water wheel beneath; bottom half of jacket is self-lined and the top half and sleeves are lined with white plain weave silk; 2 kumihimo woven silk flat cords ending in tassels are attached near the waist inside the edge of the front bands. Left sleeve at back has a yellow and green stain
1996.012.021 Kimono Kimono Heavy black silk with motifs woven in large segments over all, gold, rust, pink and white abstract line designs in the shape of large triangles with medallions, medium length sleeves, lower half not attached to body, rounded lower corner, wide band style collar extending half way down front, upper half and sleeves have pink silk lining, lower half and sleeve edges are lined with rust colored silk.
1996.012.022 Fan Folding Fan purchased in Japan White plastic outer ribs, sandalwood spokes which are narrow on the upper half and wider with a pierced design on the lower half, transparent cloth is glued to upper spokes; design painted with a red background and branches of pinks in two groups, flowers are pink and white and black and white, dark leaves and flowers are accented by sparkles; silver foil top edge; pink tassles with chinese knots are strung through metal loop.
1996.012.023 Fan Folding Fan bought in Japan Black lacquered outer spokes, upper half of sandalwood spokes are narrow and lower half is wider with a pierced design, fabric is glued across upper half; painted background ranging from orange to peach color, painted pink cherry blossoms with white outlines, green and yellow centers, brown branches. 1996.012.028 Fan Folding Fan (Sensu) Black lacquered bamboo spokes held with metal pin, painted paper covers both sides of upper half of spokes and is stitched to the outer spokes with white thread, pattern on both sides has gold background and plum branches with red buds and flowers with yellow stamens, grey branches. Stored in lidded cardboard box covered with white paper on which purple fan motifs are printed.
1996.012.029 Fan (Sensu) Folding Fan (Sensu) Bamboo spokes, outer spokes stained dark brown, upper half of spokes are narrow with silk cloth glued to them, painted design with orange area and orange grasses, silver willow branches and white area painted with white waves and blue water bugs; at left is written in black "1947 Tokyo ginza". Couple of rips in cloth next to spokes.
1996.012.030 Fan Folding Fan (Sensu) Bamboo spokes which narrow at upper half, outer spokes are thicker and widen at top, paper is glued on both sides of upper half, printed stripes ranging from dark, medium and light green along top edge and wide mottled green stripe at lower edge, between are several vertical rows of black kanji, "nice to know you, A." in English and a flower shape with the name I.B. House (probably a commerative gift), back has a white streaked plain paper; spokes are held together with black metal grommet through which a fine grey silk cord is tied.
1996.012.031 Fan Complimentary Folding Fan from Cathay Pacific Airlines Bamboo spokes with thicker outer spokes, covered on both sides with white paper, black edge, printed with orange, brown, green, red, yellow and blue scenes: Buddhist monks and the Daibatsu, dragon dance, dragon boat with a flying carp, musicians, chado tea ceremony, "Cathay Pacific" printed in green. Plastic sleeve with Cathay Pacific printed on it.

1996.012.033 Kimono Nagajuban Nagajuban Underkimono Pink habutai silk with yuzen zome dyed floral designs. On the middle front is yellow cloud formations with green bamboo leaves, red flowers and blue water. Below this are two green pine branches with red folliage and red branches. On right front are two green cloud formations one with blue and red bamboo leaves the other with blue and red maple leaves. below this are three green clumps of pine with red branches. Near the hem is yellow cloud formation with red and blue cherry blossoms and green leaves. On the upper tight front yellow cloud formation with green. purple and red stylized mountains. with red plants growing from top and sides. the left front sleeve has green cloud formation with red yellow and blue cherry blossoms and three red cherries, right front sleeve has pine and bamboo motifs. The upper back has green cloud formation with yellow and red cherry blossoms and blue water. Pine, maple leave and plum blossoms are scattered over the back and in the lower right back is green cloud formation with red and blue peaches and green leaves. the sleeve backs are painted with pine, cherry and mountain designs. Several motifs are accented with gold leaf - surihaku. The kimono has long sleeves open on the inside edge and lined with an orange silk band. There is a band collar and a white damask silk eri collar basted over the edge. Kimono is folded on the waist line and stitched in place with long silk ties attached inside the fold. There are tucks stitched in place at each shoulder.
1996.012.034 Temple Cloth Nishiki Temple Cloth A woven silk rectangle with brocade designs of deer, pheasants, and flowers laid out in bands of gray, tan, blue, yellow and brown. The bands are separated with lines of gold and silver thread. The ends of the cloth are stitched to prevent raveling and the worp threads are tied into tassels each overlaping the other. The sides have narrow hem which has been machine stitched.

1996.012.038 Bowl and Plate Set Bowl and Plate Set A: Lacquered bowl, round shape with 4 indentations on sides (pumpkin like), orange outside, black inside B: Lid to bowl, round shape with fluted edges and curved stem to look like the top of a fruit, black lacquer inside and out with 3 orange, green, yellow leaves and branches painted on top C: Plate in the shape of a large leaf with a stem, black lacquer top and bottom, orange rim, painted orange and yellow veins.

Accompanying pamphlet by Inaba Cloisonne Co. tells about cloissone manufacturing process and a map of Kyoto on the back
1996.015 Miniature Kites 2 Miniature Kites in cardboard box A: Rectangular paper printed with a Ukiyo-e scene of one woman (wearing blue, pink and black kimono with maple leaves, striped obi) fixing the hair of another (wearing blue, pink and black kimono with plum blossom and paper crane motifs), kanji in upper left hand corner, paper is affixed to 4 strips of fine bamboo held in a curved position by a fine thread, at the bottom two green and white paper streamers hang down. B: Rectangular paper printed with a Ukiyo-e scene of a woman threading a needle, she is wearing burgundy, tan and black kimono, one with a dotted shibori design and one striped, elaborate hairdo with large hair ornaments, open scroll above right and kanji to the right, paper is affixed to 4 strips of fine bamboo held in a curved position by a fine thread, at the bottom two green and white paper streamers hang down. C & D: Two miniature string holders for the kites, tiny tube of bamboo is inserted into the hole of a string holder also made of tiny pieces of bamboo, fine white thread wrapped around the holders act as the string. E & F: Two white folded cardboard trays to fit inside lidded box, hold the miniature kites G: White cardboard box bottom is held with staples H: Top of cardboard box is decorated with gold leaf designs and has a large blue sticker on top with red and white kite shapes, ocean spray and kanj, two round stickers are attached to the lid.
1996.016.001 Jacket Blue Silk Damask Jacket Jacket crosses over to right side and buttons at top right collar. and at bottom right of jacket. Damask pattern is a repeating butterfly design . From around the collar, down the right edge of the opening and to the bottom of the jacket is a multi layered edging. Along the hem of the jacket and directly in the middle the edging pattern rises up into a step shaped fountain pattern. There is a slit up the center in the front only. This pattern is repeated on the back. The inside layer is embroidered .25" band with blue outline, white center and alternating purple six petal flowers and green Buddhist endless knot pattern with a purple dot in the center. This is followed by .625" of space and then a band of braided metallic gold thread. This is followed by another space and then an embroidered band with blue outline, white line, purple line and then alternating butterfly patterns of blue with white and red dots on wings, purple wing ends and green antenna and a reverse image of white butterflies with with blue and red dots on wings, green wing ends, and purple antenna. This is followed by space and then the main edging 2.25" wide which has a light purple border with intricate embroidery on off - white back ground. This appears to have been done separately and sewn onto the jacket. The designs here include: green and blue Buddhist knots, wrapped thread curving vines and gourds, circles of pink and red flowers with green and blue leaves, blue flowers with green stems. The cuffs - W: 5.5" - are made of off white silk with elaborate embroidery. The edging of the cuff is two bands of light purple silk with an embroidered center with a geometric "Fu" design ( pattern derived from the chacter for happiness) in blue on edges and alternating facing blue dragons (?) with a blue and red ball in between them and above a green Buddhist endless knot. This alternates with a blue and white with green and red center Flaming Wheel - Buddhist symbol of teaching and law and infinite changing. There is another band of alternating butterflies as on jacket edging. This is followed by embroidery on off white silk and consists of: a central peacock in green, purple, pink, red and brown. This is surrounded by purple and blue flowers, green leaves and stems, two butterflies, and an intricate pattern in gold thread. This embroidery is only on one side of each sleeve. The jacket is fastened by two gold - brass buttons, with leaf pattern, on the bottom, two at the right side of the collar and one at the neck.
1996.016.002 Jacket and Pants Embroidered Blue Damask Jacket and Pants A: Jacket of damask fabric is blue silk woven with a diamond back - ground pattern with small solid diamond in each larger diamond. Alternating flower design, top view of flower with eight petals. Four layers of petals. Collar has black border and within the border is 1.5" embroidered section with a fabric of rust brown on borders, then green wavey line with white squares with purple centers. Other edge is same except squares are green with purple centers. Center of border has purple background with repeated image of sparrow in white thread and with red beak and green tail. Inbetween and below sparrow is green "flower" with red center and white root. Same border runs along bottom of jacket. Cuffs have same border followed by a 3.25" orange silk damask wth floral motif. Embroidered on this cuff are dark and light blue peony with light blue stem and green leaves with red veins. Bat in light blue, white, dark orange. light orange, dark green and blue with white appendages, antenna of red thread and black thread. Then a red peony with lighter shades of red, pink, white with green and teal leaves with orange veins. Then another bat in different shade of blue. Then fruit in one of teal and one of dark blue with peach colored center, orange dot on top, green butterfly shaped leaf with red veins. Along the shoulders of the jacket, on the fold is a "flower basket" - symbol of Lan Cai ho, of the Eight Immortals and the patron of florists and gardeners and a symbol of old age. The basket is embroidered and its base is light and dark blue with orange lines in between blue lines. Above this are light blue lines interwoven followed by pink lines interwoven. Blue top to pedistal. The bowl of the basket has fringe of orange hearts, and the rim is a blue and pink line. There is an orange handle with blue cross - stiches. In the center of the basket are two pieces of fruit - possibly pears - of red, orange and pink with blue spots along the front. Green and teal leaves in between fruit and around it. On one side the two flowers are side by side with six petals. One is white and orange with stitched X center. The second light blue and dark blue with white stitched X center. The other side has overlapping flowers. Top one is orange and white with blue cross stitch, under flower is yellow petals with bluecross stitch. On bottom of basket is Fly wisk - Symbol of the Buddhist admonition Do not Kill, also Magic and leadership - design of waving light blue, orange and green and dark blue. Orange stem leads to rounded end of pink, blue and light blue thread with red single lines running parallel and twisting into curls. Front of jacket has center flower basket split between the jacket opening. Basket has rust orange feet and above that is blue section; Basket body is oval shape outlined in pink with gold and teal star cross stitches. Above this is blue outline of vase neck, then pink ovals in a line just below a straight blue rim. In the vase is a large red, orange and pink peony with green and teal leaves with red veins. To the left is a long rust branch with cherry blossoms, one gold and one teal. To the right are rust branches with green and teal leaves and four small four petaled flowers; one red, one yellow and two orange with teal center. The basket has a handle of rust colored thread with blue cross stitches. A ribbon is tied around top. Behind the basket and sticking out from either side is a fly wisk. To the left is blue ribbon tied in knot with orange dot. To the right five red dots lead to light and dark blue ball with red parallel lines forming a curl. Smaller peony of red, orange and pink with rust colored stem and blue and teal leaves with red veins to either side of center flower basket. Above center and to each side of collar are two smaller peonies. Side view in red, orange and pink with blue base. Rust stems and teal and green leaves with red veins. Small blue flower of one stem followed by a burnt orange one. To the outside of these flowers is side view of fruit with dark and light green leaves with red veins, curly rust stems, and a red flower off to the side. Farther away and just up from the sleeve is side view of peony or other flower. Main one is orange, red and pink, secondary one is blue with red center. Rust colored stem and teal and green leaves. Along the bottom and on either side are plum blossoms. Rust colored stem, leaves with red veins, peach and white blossoms and blue blossoms and a few yellow. In the center bottom is a chrysanthemum with rust branches, green and teal leaves, and central flower is red, orange, pink and white. To the top is a smaller blue flower with pink center. Off to the side is a yellow, orange and green flower.The back side of the jacket has some embroidery. B: Blue Damask Pants. Drawstring tied pants of same blue damask as jacket. Bottom cuff has black silk framed two inch embroidered border. Rust colored fabric has green wavy stitching followed by white and purple. From top down pattern has another green line then series of square dots with purple centers. Solid purple line has white sparrow with red beak and green tail design and green flower or butterfly with yellow "root" and red blossom. this is followed by series of green square dots with purple centers. Wavy line pattern is repeated and bottom is hemed by black cloth. Embroidered design on pant legs repeats that of the jacket. Just above knee right in center crease is embroidered cherry or plum blossom in red, pink, silver and yellow. Two have blue centers. The stem is yellow and there are green and silver - blue long slender leaves. To either side is embroidered peony in side view. Larger blossom is two shades of red and two shades of pink. The other blossom is yellow - gold. They are on gold - yellow stem with olive and blue - green leaves. In the center of the pants leg is a Flower Basket. The base feet are orange, then a circle of pink and a circle of white. The body of the basket is outlined in yellow thread in a diamond pattern. Each diamond has blue stitched diamond and a pink one stitched center. The neck of the basket is blue thread with red dots in the center. A fringe of pink "cord" makes the rimand a line of blue thread is top of rim. There is an orange handle with intermittent white lines. There is an embroidered ribbon of blue, light boue and pink on top. The flower in the basket is two shades of red, pink and white peony. It has rust colored branches, green and silver - green leaves with red veins. To the left side is a rust colored branch with silver - green leaves and two facing blossoms. One is yellow and orange with blue stitched middle, the other is slightly behind the first and is light blue and dark blue with red stitched middle. To the right of the peony is a rust branch with smaller silver - green and green leaves and four yellow cross flowers. Behind the basket and extending on either side is a Fly Wisk. To the right are five blue dots with a pink and blue end. The wisk is red thread stitched in lines which coil around. To the left side a light and dark blue ribbon with red dot center is visible. To the left and right of the flower basket are two more embroidered flowers. Cherry or peach blossoms with rust stem and silver - green leaves. The side blossoms are pink, red and blue woth some white. Two blossoms are facing; one is orange with pink stitched spokes and a dot center. Directly below the basket is a side view of red, pink and white peony with blue center. Rust colored stems, silver - green and green leaves with red veins. To either side of this is an embroidered fruit of curving lines of yellow, orange and white center with a red dot. It has curly orange stems protruding on sides, large green and silver - green leaf with red veins and a small pink, white and blue blossom to the side.
1996.016.003 Jacket and Pants White Silk Damask Jacket and pants A: Silk Jacket - White damask is seven petal flower motif with small diamond shpes in the middle. End of sleeves have four inch cuff of light blue silk with embroidered peony in various shades of pink, butterflies in pink, green, rose and dark purple. Orange flower buds with tan stems and two tone green leaves. Black band between cuff and jacket with designs in purple, blue, green and dark purple. In between are purple and dark blue sword; blue and tan collar (?); silver - blue urn; red and blue double object; and a tan and blue fruit basket. Collar is blue with black trim, with smaller pink peonies, green stems, gold and tan flowers and four petal pink flowers with dark pink center. Embroidered on white damask are four shaded red and pink peonies. Smaller ones with green leaves and silver - blue branches. In the center and on both sides beneath are larger peonies surrounded by embroidered gold swastikas, gold and green bats, and blue lotus. Inside corners have blue, gold, white and red butterflies. Middle of jacket has gold, pink, green and red butterflies. Bottom cuff is blue with pink peonies, gold flowers. Ends are in curled pattern and bordered in black. B: Pants have zipper and hooks as closing mechanism. The pant cuffs are blue silk with black trim. Same two tone pink peony on cuffs with yellow - gold flowers and four petal pink flower with dark pink middle. On either side of lower leg on the white damask are embroidered plum blossoms in two tone blue and red with green leaves, silver - blue branches and red and yellow buds. Farther up are blue - two tone and two tone yellow flowers with green leaves and silver - blue stems. About ankle length on the crease is a red peony with multiple symbols - gold swastika, gold and green bat, blue lotus and green leaves.

On the front of each in upper left corner is story title in red characters with decorative border. Chapters are loosely held in chardboard binder of three peices. The spines of the binder are cloth covered. The cloth is white cotton with black cross pattern with faded red squares in middle spaces. Alternates with double flower pattern, one red and one blue with three red dots on side of each,. Flowers are framed by black stem. The edge of the binder is covered with green and white diamond shapes with alternating flowers. This same paper covers the back of the binder. The front of the binder has printed picture with green background with two peacocks. The top half has separate picture in red of man wth sword running to fight a snake. The bottom half has story title n red characters. Published in Shanghai. Bone clasps attached by cloth to cover. "China" printed in purple across top of cover and on back of each chapter. Faded and worn. Paper has yellowed. Binding of cover is torn on inside left. Paper of binding cracked on left and right.

1996.023.003 Robe Manchu Style Summer Dragon Robe Front opening with side fastening, tapered arms with horseshoe cuts, slits in front and back of skirt. Royal blue silk woven with gauze weave and twisted worp threads. Motifs created by needle weaving aqua, pink, fuschia, purple, and white threads. Motifs include nine five clawed dragons on front back and sleeves, flaming pearl, clouds, bamboo tube drum, cranes, bats, and good luck symbols. At the bottom are stylized waves and mountains. Around the neck and across the front and on the cuffs is black gauze band embroidered in same style as robe. Band edged with blue and gold brocade with thunder and floral design. Between the bands a gold braid has been couched to the surface. the lower part of the sleeves are made with black gauze, green, pink, yellow, orange, purple and blue stripes. The cuffs are lined with gauze woven silk. Five brass ball buttons are attached with blue and gold brocade tubes and have corresponding loops.
1996.023.004 Carpet Hanging Pile Weave Cloth Used as Hanging or Table Cover. Cotton pile weave rectangle with cut loops. Edges are machine overcast. Design consists of three lozenge medallion shapes in central field separated by Arabesque style half medallions on either side of two sets of small double medallions. Geometric and floral designs in an all over pattern and possibly rabbits in center of main medallion. Geometric pattern band begins in center and another narrower band runs along the outside. Black central background, blue shaped which have faded to gray and beige and yellow, green and white accents. Along one edge are seven thread loops.
1996.023.005 Shawl Shawl or Piano Cloth Black silk plain weave with flowers embroidered with silk thread in satin stitch. Four large orange and white peonies are placed near corners and surrounded by other orange and white flowers resembling roses with scrolling stems and leaves. A deep knotted silk fringe is stitched to a narrow hem around the shawl.

1996.023.007 Vest Vest Blue satin with silk embroidered motifs in green, blue, red, purple orange, yellow and white. On the front motifs done with satin sttich include: A chiling, phoenix under maple tree, stork flying, peacock, chiling and tiger below. At the bottom another chiling and a pheasant. Animals are with bamboo, peonie, and orchid and plum motifs. Between some motifs are gold couched medallions containing flower motifs. the back of the jacket features two chiling with Buddhist wheel between, various birds include crane, pheasant, mandarin duck. Lower portion is a horse, tiger and another Chiling. they are with peonies, chrysanthemums, and plum blossoms as well as gold couched medallions. Around the neck line side slit and hem is black satin band with blue, grey, purple and white Buddhist motifs. At the sides the band is shaped like a cloud formation. A narrow yellow ribbon with blue and red dots outlines the edge of the band. Black band around neck edge is embroidered with blue and white peonies and lotus blossoms alternating with gold couched coin motifs. Front opening, the armholes and hem are finished with aqua bias satin binding. The inside is lined with a brick red light weight silk. The vest opens straight down the front and has three satin ball buttons and corresponding loops.
1996.023.008 Bag Fan Holder or possibly Chopstick holder. Blade-shaped holder made with two layers of stiffened fabric sewn down the sides and at the bottom. The top is wider and curved. One side is covered with black satin and is embellished with metallic purl froming shape of cloud at top with two flowers and a branch exrtending towards bottom. The purl is tarnished and looks gold pink, blue and black in places. A cear glass bead is sewn near the top. the other side is covered with blue satin and embelished with gold metallic purl in shape of a cloud near the top. with clear bead sewn near middle. Six Chinese characters are formed with tarnished metallic purl in vertical line. "Long right man official to be the best." the outside edges are bound with woven braid in black and white geometric design. The case is lined with blue cotton fabric and has a beige lute cord attached to either side of opening. Condition: some of purl is detached.
1996.023.009 Hat Chinese Officials Informal Hat (Kua p'i Mao) Skull cap shaped made of black silk satin lined with red cotton triangular segments sewn together with bias band running around the lower edge which is bound with bias satin binding. At the very top is red silk braided thread knot. Inside the hat is black woven label with gold colored Chinese characters, hat manufacturer: Sheng Shi Fu hat factory. Above the label two more black characters stamped onto red lining, Lin ( last name of last owner).
1996.023.010 Robe A woman's Short Coat Black silk damask with floral medallions and swastika pattern. Embroidered in red ink, blue, grey, mauve, beige, and white. Scattered motifs. Motifs include: Flower baskets with peonies, plum blossoms, lotus flowers, and flywhisks with double fish. Interspersed with flower baskets are peonies, bats, chrysanthemums, grapes, butterflies. Symbols represent marriage, fertility, happiness, longevity, and house management. Around the neck line and across the front, the hem and side slits are gold couched bands in the shapes of clouds. The bands have cloud shape medallions with silk embroidered figures, flowers, buildings, in green, fuschia, pink, red, blue, and grey. Along edges of the band are embroidered blue stars, within gold couched honeycombed designs the bands are bound with black silk and in the corners they create a reverse applique cloud design. to the inside of these bands is applied machine woven blue purple, green, white and beige ribbon with butterfly motifs. The robe is collarless, has a front opening which closes on the side with three fabric ball buttons and corresponding loops. The square sleeves have a blue floral damask band which is embroidered on the front with silk motifs. These include flower vases, peaches, lotus, and the wheel done in red, green, blue and grey forbidden stitch outlined with gold couching. The coat is fully lined with plain blue silk . On the inside right front is a paper label with black ink markings.
1996.023.011 Jacket Man's robe or Jacket Dark blue satin silk opens in the front, no collar, large square sleeves, Around the neck, down the front, the hem, the side slits and the sleeves is band of white satin embroidered with silk in satin stitch. Motifs include green, blue, beige, orange, and white pheasants, peacocks, bamboo, plum blossoms, orchids, rocks, and butterflies. The edges are bound with black satin and takes shape of collar at neck. Around edge of band is machine woven white, purple and green ribbon with Lu character and floral designs motifs. the jacket is closed with brass ball button At the neck line is corresponding loop. Further down two satin ties with braid trim are attached to each side of the front opening. The jacket is fully lined with turquoise light weight silk which is deteriorating in places. The seams are coming apart under left arm.

A: Pink and white peonies on blue branches with green and blue leaves, sword like green leaves with purple flowers and brown grass seed heads and purple and white spray of flowers on blue branch. At the bottom a multicolored mandarin duck with wings over back floats among green and purple waterlines next to blue and green water pads, rushes, and other small flowers. On back top are written Chinese characters in black ink. Mauve colored ribbon with printed red characters. B: Similar embroidered motifs surrounding a red peony. A green and blue shrub with dasiy like flowers at lower left. Across the bottom multicolored wood duck turing head above waterlines, reeds, and waterlily leaves. On the back top is written Chinese characters in black ink.

1996.023.014 Silk Weaving Silk Brocade Square Maroon satin background with four large phoenixes on each corner in gold and silver. Gold and silver clouds and smaller phoenixes around larger ones. Two edges have gold colored salvages and the other two are hemed by hand.
1996.023.015 Figure Single piece ivory carved figure of woman warrior Wan-Mu-Lan. Figure is standing, right arm at waist holding Kwandao, left arm at chest level with index finger pointing up, and thumb and middle fingers touching. She is wearing helmet with ornate front. Four sections of helmet have fish scale pattern engraved and inked. Crown of helmet has two long pheasant feathers streaming down the back. Her hair is long and in a tail down the back; it is textured and painted black. Her eyes and eyebrows are painted black. Her lips are painted red. She is wearing earrings. She is dressed in a Ming Dynasty military uniform. She has a shawl with cloud motifs over her shoulders and tied at the neck. On the shoulders are "lion" heads with open mouths from which goes the arm armor; a chain of metal with a cloth fringe. An underrobe is visible on lower arms. It has carved flowers. The metal chain armor covers the chest and back. Around the waist a thin belt holds a hip and back skirt and a separate front piece in the shape of a "lion" head. There is an engraving of a phoenix on the back of the skirt. Below this is a skirt of chain mail. Underneath this, and seen beneath the knees, is another skirt of cloth. A sunrise engraving in front and back. She is wearing military boots. On her left side, attached to the belt by two thin cords is a long straight word with double tassel on handle. The Kwan dao blade has cloud motifs and rising sun. A single tassel hangs from the side of the blade. The shaft runs to the bottom and a barbed tip is on the end. The small finger on the left hand is broken off.
1996.023.016 Ivory Panels Two carved ivory scenes, each with a carved wood stand, Chien Long Year of Qing dynasty. A- Carved ivory scene. Scene is flanked by section of carved clouds and within each are two dragons, one above, one below, and there is a ball between them. 76 figures are wearing long robes with sleeves which cover their hands. From left to right two figures hold fishing poles with lines wrapped around them, two hold poles in water. A figure behind them holds a pot of tea. They fish in a lotus pond and a figure is on the other side waving to them. Figures walk along a path above and below a wall. A figure carries tea in front of a circular opening. In front of a buidling three large figures and a small one converse. Above them in a building are four figures, on the second story above them are four more. Above this on a bridge are seven figures. Next to them in a seperate compound are four figures, one sits on a swing. Below them, coming through a stone arch are four figures, next to them in from of the main building are figures on the path below, on the steps to it and on the veranda. To the right of them are figures crossing another birdge to antother buidling. Below the bridge is a pond with a large rock and bird on it. B- is a mirrior image of A. The bottom right hand corner has been cracked and replaced. C & D- Ornately carved two-piece stands. The top has high sides to left and right. These are carved in the shape of a duck head. Along the inner portion of the top of the stand is carved a line of "thunder". The feet of the stand curve out and in and have etched leaf designs. In the middle of the stand is a large central carved section and two smaller ones to each side. The small ones are hour-glass shaped with a bundled flower and vine design in vertical postion. The central one has a central flower and multiple curved leaves which at either end form another blossom. The back of the stands are attached by two single dowel hinges and are one-third the size of the front. They are square coming off the hinges in straight lines with a perpendicular peice connecting them and forming the feet. A carved brace is in between the two hinge pieces. The foot section on C is longer than that of D.

Modeled after kimono with band style collar, large set in sleees extend below the armhole and are rounded at the inner bottom. Curves in at the waist line, flairs out at the hips, hem dips at the front and back. A mon is embroidered at the center back in white silk thread with black silk thread details. It is in shape of three heart shape leaves with ring around the outside. Two red and white labels are attached to inner collar at back. Woven in English "Hand Embroidery." Second red label woven with white thread shows two dragons, Mt Fuji, and " Iwata, Made in Japan"

A long front band shoulders, sleeve and hem with red and white chrysanthemums, yellow flowers, white, yellow and orange cherry blossoms, blue wysteria and green leaves. Modeled after man's kimono with a band collar, narrow set in sleeves. Three quarter length. robe closed by tying two black silk ribbons attached to the collar in front and one silk black ribbon lower down to be tied to a band of floral fabric which is pinned to the collar in front. Made for the western market as a woman's dressing gown.
1996.024.003 Dress Lounging Dress Ecrue colored habutai plain weave silk with habutai silk printed with blue Chinese designs on the sleeves the collar, front band and belt. Front bodice is gathered into high waist line, has dropped sleeves, which are curved on the bottom edge. Three triangular shapes of the blue Chinese printed fabric are applied to each sleeve with dragons as the main motif. the back bodice is eased into the wasitline band has central back seam. Dark blue silk triangle with dragon designs is applied to the neckline and extends in bands down the front. The skirt of the dress open in front is cut on a bias and has two godets sewn in at the back hemline. the two bands down the front are different, one has blue back ground and one has ecrue background. A sash made of the blue Chinese print silk is attached to both side seams. Worn as a light weight dressing gown.
1996.024.004 Robe Robe or Dressing Gown Red silk crepe lined with red habutai silk The red crepe has a yuzon zume dyed design, Black wavy band around the neck line forming a collar shape with blue, purple, and red flowers with green vine leaves. Same design repeated on sleeve hems along the hem of the garmet and up the side slits creating a Chinese look. Large floral motifs are scattered on the red background and include pink and tan chrysanthemums, pink cherry blossoms, orange and yellow maple leaves, pink and purple leaves, purple and white wisteria, pink plum blossoms, and pink daisies. the robe is cut striaght three quarter inch lenght set in kimono type sleeves. no collar at front bands. It has four black silk frog fasteners down upper front. Red ribbon loop sewn in to back neckline for hanging. Made for western market as woman's dressing gown.
1996.024.005 Robe Chinese Robe altered for Western Wear Green silk gauze with self woven medallions containing floral designs. robe opens in front with side closing and has sleevews which extends straight from the shoulders. There are slits on the side and no collar. A black gauze woven band with embroidered designs including green, yellow and purple butterflies, and blue and green flowers and are applied around the neckline across the front, down the side slits and around the sleeve hems. These bands are bound with black bias silk and to the outside is a machine woven band with white background, blue, fuschia and green butterflies and flowers, green, mauve and purple edging, At the side slits the gauze band is shaped into a cloud formations and is trimed with a narrow white, gold, blue and purple band. On the sleeves next to band is machine woven band similar to the one on the front. The inner part of lower sleeve is lined with white gauze fabric which is embroidered with green, gold and blue plum blossoms and a butterfly. Sleeve ends are folded back so that the white gauze appears as a band beneath the black gauze band. Four brass ball buttons are stitched with piping to the left front following the curve of the opening. Matching black loop closures are stitched to the front. A hole is torn in the front right sleeve.
1996.024.006 Robe Woman's Summer Robe Pink silk gauze weave with woven motifs including buddhist knot, bats, flowers, and longevity characters. Sleeves extend from the body of the garnet and narrow at the wrist, front opening with side closures. Black gauze band with embroidered blue, green orange white, yelllow and purple butterflies, pine branches, and plum blossoms. are applied around the neck line across the front, down the front side and around the sleeve hems. Another piece around the hem of the garmet is half unstitched. The black gauze band is trimmed with blue silk bias binding. Next to the gauze band is machine woven and with white, blue, green, yellow and fuschia floral designs. Outlined with purple,green and gold edging. Pink gauze standup collar has two bands of blue silk bias applied underneath the black gauze band. The bands are becomong unstitched down the front and the silk stiffener is deteriorating. There are five brass ball button attached to left front and on the rght front are corresponding blue silk fabric loops. Yellow stains at underarms and a few down the front.
1996.024.007 Shawl Shawl or Piano Scarf Pale yellow silk crepe embroidered in the center with all-over pattern of yellow and rose colored flowers. Yellow blossoms and buds and green vine like leaves. Cotton thread stitches on the back indicate the needle work done by machine. Some of the threads are coming loose. Around the outside is deep knotted fringe. The knotted open work band is machine made.

1996.024.009 Purse Silk bag with draw string Made with pink silk crepe lined with white habutai silk and inter lined with cotton gauze. Bag is sewn in cylindar shape and gathered at the bottom. from which a silk tassel extends. Tassel is faded pink with knot a tthe top. Purple, orange, white, blue and yellow ribbon roses with leaves are stitched in group of five on front and group of two on back. Purse is dawn together on top by pale silk cord which runs through a stitched casing an inch from the top of the bag. Bright pink silk crepe has faded except where it was protected by the folds.
1996.024.010 Brass Plate Decorative Brass Plate Round shape with depression in center and a ring shaped foot on bottom. Pattern is carved on top. In the center is shishi, with pine branches overhead and wave shaped foliage underneath. The central medallion is surrounded by geometric line design with bunches of small circles which have been punched in a band on sides of the depression. The rim has four carved shishi interwoven with leaf designs. Outside edge has scroll design band. On the bottom can be seen moulded medallion in center with two dragons surrounding a group of six Chinese characters. One is big, bright, ...
1996.024.011 Fan Peacock Feather Fan Carved white ivory slats hold peacock feathers stitched together so the fan can be extended open. 18 peacock feathers ending in green and blue "eyes" are painted purple along the stalk and shorter feathers. The 14 middle feather designs of flowers and fruit and birds are painted in green, blue, orange, yellow and white. The thin bone slats are pierced with curving abstract designs, the two outer ones extend out toward the edge of the fan. The center slats are carved to stick into the quill of the feather. Slats are held with brass nail attached to small handle at bottom from which a tassel hangs. The fuschia and white tassel is hanging from two blue beads strung onto a beige cotton cord.
1996.024.012 Parasol Silk Parasol Handle and spokes made from bamboo, aqua color habutai silk is glued between bamboo spokes and painted with pink and red pinks "carnations" and green leaves. The flowers cover two thirds of the cloth and the other part are two black ink dragonflies. A bamboo knot on top is covered with black lacquered paper and the spokes near the center are painted with black lacquer. The bamboo handle has been cut so that root stubs can be seen at the end. The inner spokes are attached to the upper spokes with heavy cord and are held in place with cotton thread. A bone retractable peg holds the umbrella open when slates are pushed up the handle. On the outside a cotton braid is looped and knotted to serve as a fastener to keep umbrella closed. The silk is beginning to split.

1997.001.001 Kimono Woman's Formal Black Silk Furisode with Yuzenzome and Katazome Design Very long body and long sleeves with rounded corner and opening on edge closest to the body; long straight collar extends halfway down the body and is wide so it can be folded in half lengthwise (tacked in place), around is the neck is a reinforcement of self fabric stitched with white thread. Black silk crepe lined with red habutae silk lining extending 3/4 down the garment and into the sleeves; self-fabric lines the bottom 1/4 of the garment and the inner edge of the sleeves. Hand stitched. Yuzenzome and katazome design extends halfway up the front and a 1/4 of the way up the back of the kimono, across the top back and shoulders and along the lower 2/3 of the sleeves. Yuzenzome (paste resist, hand painted) and Katazome (paste resist, stencil) design in purple, light blue, bright blue, navy blue, grey, white (resist), tan, yellowish green, olive green, moss green, yellowish gold, orange in various shades, silver and gold. Primary motifs are folding fans with ribbons and tassels (some closed and some open) and a palace carriage which has accents of gold couching, one fan is outlined with gold couching and decorated with two cranes which have feathers and beaks with gold couching and two flowers accented with embroidered satin stitch. Other motifs are pine branches, chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, maple leaves, bamboo leaves, persimmon, peony, bush clover, orchids, plum, water motifs and kanoko shibori (deer spot) accents (created with a stencil). The overall design continues on the interior bottom quarter of the kimono. At the back of each sleeve and at each shoulder is there are 5 white mon (Hara family crest) of a large circle at the top overlapped with two smaller circles at the bottom inside a ring representing charcoal arranged in a brazier. This formal kimono would be worn by a young woman according to the long length and rounded corners of sleeves, red lining, the extent of design coverage, boldness of design and color, and the 5 mon.

The motifs which repeat at regular intervals include hana tebako boxes decorated with chrysanthemum, pine and waves and tied with orange cord and tassels; folding fan (sensu) has a scene with courtyard and open Japanese house with a folding screen, two cranes, pine and plum; bamboo, pine and plum ("three friends"). Formal obi appropriate for a young woman to wear at all seasons.
1997.001.003 Obi age sash Red silk obi age Narrow habutae silk sash dyed red with kanoko shibori ("fawn spot" tie dying) in the center section leaving the ends undecorated. To create the crinkled effect white silk prepared by tying white cotton thread around pinches of fabric to create a design resembling spots on a fawn. The piece is then dip dyed and when dry the threads are removed creating white spots where the thread resisted the dye. This obi age was not pressed so the fabric shrinks up to a narrower width than at the ends. Within the shibori there are motifs of large fans alternating with small fans (sensu) against a basket weave design with two narrow stripes on each end of the sash. Within two large fans are kiri (palownia) leaves and blossoms and two others contain 7 petalled flowers (possibly chrysanthemums)--the motifs are created by tying various sized pinches of fabric and creating rows of dots in various directions. There are selvage edges on the sides and the ends remain unfinished. The obi age is tied the obi and tucked into the top of the obi. The bright red color is appropriate for young women to wear.

The tie is created using the kumihimo braiding technique which weaves a narrow tube that is flattened and the threads at both ends are tied where the weaving stops creating a 1" fringe. The cord is tied around the obi and knotted in the front to hold the obi in place and serve as an accent.

Formed with overlapping equal sized rectangular pieces which are stitched together with red silk thread (faggoting) in the center section to form the exterior pocket and the trifold structure. A mirror, visible through an oval opening, has been placed between the lining and wallet stiffener and a pocket has been created into the lower flap. B: Kaishi papers for tea ceremony sweets; 7 folded white papers are tucked into the outside pocket of the wallet. C: Sealed rectangular white paper envelope with wooden picks used for tea ceremony sweets. D: Brocade carrier--rectangular shaped flat brocade covered stiffened stick with a pocket lined in orangey red silk; orange silk knotted cord attached to a red loop at a corner edge of the stick, ending in a orange, gold and white silk thread tassel topped with a gold colored ball covered with a knotted orange silk thread mesh. E: Silver alloy ornament shaped like a hair pin--a coin shaped piece with butterfly and crysanthemum design on one side and crane and pine motif on the other from which 7 lengths of silver chain are suspended, ending in chrysanthemum shaped charms; soldered to the "coin" is a flat rectangular open bar with rounded ends. F: Brocade wallet band in same fabric as wallet is folded and tied with orange silk cord attached to a small pouch. The band is trimmed with white silk piping and lined with orangey red silk and stiffened and folded to hold the wallet closed. The pouch is made from the same fabric and is pleated at the top (tacked shut) and can be adjusted open or closed with the red plastic beads strung on the cord which is tied to the band and passed through holes in the pouch and tied into a decorative knot at the front; white piping around the top of the pouch.

This kimono is appropriate for an older woman (despite the red lining) as indicated by the simple, subtley colored and small amount of design, and shorter sleeves.

Yuzenzome design extends halfway up front exterior and interior. Yuzenzome (past resist lines, hand painted) in brown, blue, blue grey, green in various shades and beige. Bamboo motif with brown mottled stalks and thin green branches growing from bottom accented with gold satin embroidery; bamboo leaves are executed in various designs: green leaves with gradation of color and blue grey leaves have a bamboo grass design; cream colored embroidered flecks. Formal nagajuban worn under a kimono.
1997.001.008 Obi Sash Green Silk Brocade Maru Obi Green satin double layer obi with all over (maru) brocade design in gold, light olive green, medium olive green, and dark olive green thread with bamboo leaf, stalk, floral, wave, and diamond motifs. The fabric is folded in half lengthwise and machine stitched along one side and two ends. The motifs which repeat at regular intervals include a background design of thin gold babmoo stems and stalks alternating with diamond shapes outlined in a gold border and filled with semicircular wave patterns. The primary motif are sprays of bamboo leaves in medium green threed. The leaves are filled with gold and dark green floral motifs (perhaps and at least two other flowers). At each end of the obi are gold stripes; one end is trimmed close to the edge with two thin stripes, the other end is trimmed with a thin and a broader stripe and leaves a 3/4" width of plain green satin at the edge. Formal obi appropriate for older woman to wear in any season.

To create the crinkled effect white silk is prepared by tying white cotton thread around pinches of fabric in a design resembling spots on a fawn. The piece is then dip dyed and when dry the threads are removed, creating white spots where the thread resisted the dye. This obi agi was pressed only slightly so that the fabric shrinks up to a narrower width in the "striped" sections. There is a band of crinkled shibori at each end of the obi. The rust color bands are edged in white and the fawn spots within the bands form a sort of zig-zag design. There are some brown colored stains throughout the obi age, otherwise condition is good. The obi age is tied oabove and tucked into the top of the obi. The bright color is appropriate for a younger woman to wear.

Five white mon family crests (two on front, two on sleeves and one at center back) in shape of a large circle at the top overlapped with two smaller ones at the bottom encircled by a white ring, representing charcoal arranged in a braziers (Hara family crest). One quarter of the way down the collar are two black silk loops for the haori tie. The sleeves are lined with gold colored damask creating a mottled textures and the inner edge is lined with black self fabric (3" band); the front is lined with the gold damask 1/3 of the way down and the lower 2/3 is lined with self fabric; the back lower half is lined with self fabric and the upper half is lined with the gold damask with brocade fan shaped album style designs and six silver brocade kanji "Shi-sen-do" (name of building "poem-old man-building") referring to the upper autumn design done in the style of sumi painting featuring a gray, beige and black pavillion with a lamp, bridge, trees and grasses; and "Gen-sei-an" (name of an era) referring to the lower winter design featuring a dark brown, beige, gray and light brown representing a temple complex among trees and mountains.
1997.001.013 Hakama Skirt Formal Hakama Skirt worn with men's Kimono Brown stripped densely woven silk with five box pleats in the front and two large double pleats in the back. The skirt is open on each side at the hips and faced on the outside front. The inner front has a double flap of fabric and a waistband which extends into long ties. At the back waist is a stiffened back support with two triangular flaps on the outside and ties extending out from each side. The skirt is sewn by hand.
1997.001.014 Nagajuban Under robe Men's Nagajuban to be worn under Kimono Short square sleeves with straight collar which extends to the hem of the robe with navy blue weft-faced silk over collar (eri) around the neck line. A moss green silk crepe (chirimen) with a band of white petals in a grid like pattern around the hip area. On the back are two hand painted (Te-zome) scenes: one in the shape of an open fan has a gray background with beige and black pine branches and needles with accents of gold. On one side the shape appears to be folded over revealing a toupe under side with white flecks. The other seen is painted within a rectangular shape and shows the figure of the god of wisdom who has a high forehead and a white beard he is slightly stooped and wears a gray robe with a white sash. At the right is some kanji in black "South mountain blessing" with the painters name at left and a gray rock beneath. Near the hem line are two taupe colored fungus shapes. Sleeves are lined with self fabric and the left sleeve has a fungus shape inside. The body is fully lined with indigo colored hand woven pongee silk. There is a small hole near the edge of the collar which has been repaired with dark thread.
1997.001.015 Obi Sash Man's Black Silk Heko Obi with Kanako Shibori Design Black crepe heko (soft) obi with kanoko shibori ("fawn spot" tie dying) on the ends and in small sections througout. To reate the crinkled effect, white silk is prepared by tying white cotton thread around pinches of fabric to create a design resembling spots on a fawn. The piece is then dip dyed and when dry the threads are removed to create white spots where the thread resisted the dye. This obi was pressed so that the crinkled effect is minimized in the design areas at the ends but the length of the middle section is fairly crinkled. The shibori design is in the form of triangles which may represent mountain (or land) and water. The smaller triangle is filled with shibori in the shape of wave patterns. A band of three narrow stripes formed by a single row of shibori trim the design at the side closest to the end of the sash. Place throughout the middle section are small shibori designs in the shape of circles and squares. The soft obi for men is generally worn with yukata

1997.002.001 Cheong Sam Dress Short Sleeved Cheong San of bronze brown brocade with dark green and bronze - brown ribbon trim. The front over flap panel is symmetrical and closes to the right. Three frogs adorn the panel, two serving as closures and an additional frog at the neck also acts as a closure. The frogs are elaborate traditional knotted button and loop closures. The neck sleeves, panel and slits are trimmed in .5" bronze ribbon and dark green piping. The brocade is composed of an all over floral pattern in dark blue, light blue, purple, brown, yellow, green., gray and white threads. The cheong sam is lined with brown silk. There is a zipper under the right arm extending to the hips. Three snaps help to keep the front panel closed.
1997.002.002 Cheong Sam Dress Cap sleeve blue satin cheong Sam with gold and silver couching in a peony pattern. The diagonal closing fastens on the tight via six black snaps. The closing sleeves and slits are trimmed in piping of the same blue satin as the dress. Each side of the stand - up collar is decotated with the same floral motif . The main design starts at the center - chest and flows down the right side of the dress. Gold peonies and silver leaves and stems are formed by couching - the gold thread is stitched to the fabric with a grayish - silver thread. The Cheong sam is not lined. There is a silver colored zipper under the right arm extending to the hip close fitting with bust darts and shaped waist, calf - length appropriate for evening wear.

The dress is close fitting with front and back darts and a shaped waist; stand up collar, rounded in the front; cap-style set - in sleeves; calf length.

Dress closes at the right via eleven snaps that line the sleeve, shoulder and neck. There is a pale yellow zipper under the right arm extending to the hip. The elaborate design is created by stitching small and large sequins round seed and cylindrical bugle beads and gold balls to the dress with yellow thread . The cheong sam is not lined. Close fitting dress has bust, front back darts; decorated with stand - up collar with rounded front; ankle length appropriate for evening wear. Unusual right side closing has facing at right front arm hole and shoulder. Small brown stain on reverse at mid - back.

B: Matching jacket of same fabric, H: 21.5", W: 23", shaped body with diagonal bust darts, darts in front and back. Faced squarish neck line. Double breasted front with one row of self covered non -functional buttons on the right side and four satin loops on the right edge. Left side has four self covered buttons. In addition to the buttons the front flap is fastened with snap fasteners across the top down the side and across the bottom. Long shaped sleeves with elbow dart and narrow under arm gussets. Fully lined with aqua colored silk.
1997.002.006 Boy's robe Short rose and brown silk damask robe with bat and 'longevity ' designs. Long sleeved boy's tunic with overlapping front panel which closes to the right. Six loops and knotted button closures across diagonal and down the right side. One additional closure at front of stand up collar. All closures are made from the same fabric as the robe. 1997.002.007 Jacket Black silver padded quilted reversible jacket with off white on reverse side and silver longevity medallions . Jacket closes at middle front via four sets of frogs, elaborate loop and knotted button closures in black and off white silk, molded into a shape similar to the character for longevity. The collar , front edge, hem and sleeves are trimmed in off white piping. The inner edges of these areas are machine quilted with a meandering design. The longevity medallions are woven in silver - gray thread on a satin background. Two inset pockets on each side have quilted and piped welts. Both sides have underarm gussets. The black and white sides of the cuffs are reversed so when they are folded back one side appears all black with silver medallion and the other side all white with white medallions.
1997.002.008 Robe Embroidered satin Robe possibly used for theatre Long shaped robe has a diagonal closing extending to the right side. Long sleeves cut in one with the body with flared extensions. Short stand up collar with squared front. The robe is made of pale blue satin and lined with white linen. The entire robe is embroidered and couched with birds, trees and flowers. The front and back have identical embroidery motifs which join at the shoulders. There are three purple, orange, white, black and aqua birds worked in silk thread satin stitch. They have yellow beaks, pink tongues and pink and black eyes. And are sitting in a tree which has gold and silver couched bark. The tree has green leaves and yellow orange and aqua blossoms worked in satin stitch. Near the bottom of the tree are large, purple pink and white peonies with green leaves. At the very bottom are pink aqua, yellow, purple and white ovals which maybe colorful mushrooms. These are surrounded by green spiky leaves. The extensions on the sleeves are embroidered in the same style, with two birds branches, leaves, and chrysanthemums in the same colors. The neck, side opening and sleeve and bottom hems are trimmed with a bright blue satin band which has a woven design of silver plum blossoms and black branches. The collar is also covered with this same trim. On the inside of this band is a silver woven braid with a white and red center. The robe is fastened with a total of nine white braided cord frogs forming three petals one side with loops and the other with knotted balls. There are two brown spots near the bottom and two on the front right sleeve.
1997.002.009 Robe and Vest Woman's Chinese robe with matching two piece vest A: Robe, L: 53", W: 72", Appliqued silk satin robe has overlapping front with a diagonal closing on right side. Narrow stand up collar which is square in front, long body and long sleeves cut in one with the body. Center front and back sleeve. The background is lavender colored damask with motif of grayish cherry blossoms and bamboo leaves. There are bands of appliqued silk satin at the neck line, the bottom of the sleeves, on either side of the slits that open from the hem. Starting at the top the collar has a pink band with green blue and yellow piping and below this a bright blue band with yellow and green piping. The wavy bands radiating out from the neck line are black, bright blue, pink and yellow all piped with green, white or blue. Inset in the blue piece on the front is a pink lotus blossom e with a pod and leaf in reverse applique. The edges of the design are piped in green. The bands on either side of the openings are cloud shaped. The yellow outer band is piped in green next to a pink band piped in blue, green and white. Next is a bright blue cloud shaped band which has inserts of reverse applique designs. Near the top are two pink and white pomegranates with green leaves. Below these are white and pink peonies with green leaves and a pink bud. The outer band is black piped with green, blue and white. The bands extend across the bottom hem and are duplicated on the back. The bands on the sleeves are yellow, pink, bright blue and black satin piped in blue, green and white. The robe opens on the right side and has an under flap with a patch pocket which is hidden when the robe is closed. There are four spiral design frogs with loops and knot balls made of green satin. There are two more frogs double spirals at the neck and collar bone. In addition to the frogs there are snap fasteners. The garment is lined with blue silk. It has perspiration stains and other discoloration's. The inside neck is protected with a white cotton band which is soiled and has a piece of adhesive tape with the name "Helen Kay" written in blue ink. B & C; Two piece vest, H: 24". W: 22.25", Vest is made of the reverse of the robe with grayish blue satin and lavender cherry blossoms and bamboo leaves. All of the edges of both pieces of the vest are decorated with wavy bands of applique. The middle pink band has black bands on either side piped in green, blue and white. An inner woven ribbon band is off white with a design of pink and blue butterflies and chrysanthemums with yellowish green leaves. The outer border of this ribbon has a black key design running along both sides. The two pieces of the vest are fastened across the upper front and down the sides with green satin spiral frogs. Which have loops and metal buttons in gold and black with swastikas in the center. The vest is lined with blue silk. B: Is the back and front yolk of the vest with a stand up scalloped collar which has two wavy bands of black piped in green, blue and white satin and lined with dark blue silk. It fastens at the front with a loop and ball button and a frog one with a loop and a metal button. In addition to the applique bands on the back the vest has two reverse applique designs in the center and on the sides. The one in the center has padded yellow and pink Peonies with green leaves and a pink bud. The motifs on the sides are citron blossoms of yellow with pink piping and green leaves. At the back of the vest the background fabric in the middle back is discolored in two places and on the inside back is an adhesive tape with "Mrs. Lew G. Kay sleeveless Applique Vest" written in blue ink. C: Front of the vest Inaddition to applique bands there are four reverse applique designs. At the top on the chest is apadded green pink and yellow bat. With two little eyes drawn in in black ink. Just below this are two green and pink Chinese coins which are inter locked and surrounded by green, yellow and pink ribbon shapes. The motif in the lower center front is the same peony design as the back. The two citron blossoms on each side are duplicates of the back. On the right side the two buttons have blue faceted glass centers instead of the swastika. Both the front and the back have a vent.
1997.002.010 Jacket and Skirt Han Chinese style women's applique jacket and pleated skirt A: Jacket, H: 29", W: 55", lavender silk damask background( bamboo leaf and cherry blossom motif) has sleeves cut in one with the body which flares out at the bottom. Front and back have center seams the sleeves have extensions on the ends and the jacket overlaps on the right in a wavy diagonal line an opening along the right side. The collar is made of a narrow band in lavender silk covered wirth two black satin bands and piped in white satin. There is a deep wavy black satin band running around the neck line and followin g the curve of the diagonal closing. Near the end of this band is reverse applique motif of two silhouetted pomegranets surrounded by a rabbit shaped lavender background and outlined with white piping. There are wide straight black satin bands at the ends of the sleeves. Next to the black bands is a curving woven white ribbon with blue, yellow, and pink floral butterfly motifs runing along the center. They are bordered on each side with blue chevons and a band containing black leaves and flowers. There is a patch pocket on the under flap which is hidden when the jacket is closed. There is a large white satin frog in the shape of two butterflies with double loop and knot located over the right collar bone. There are three spiral frogs, one at the collar with double loop and button closing and two at the right side. The jacket is lined with blue cotton. The inside neck is a piece of adhesive tape with "Mrs. Lew G. Kay, pink and black jacket top". Written in blue ink. There is fading on the left under arm and on the right back sleeve. There are lip stick traces on the fog at the neck. B: Skirt, H: 38", W: 26.5", has black damask narrow pleats on each side. The pleats are tacked toghther with black thread and have a machine woven ribbon border near the bottom. It has a yellow background with pink peonies, green leaves and blue butterflies bordered in light pink and blue. Below this are three black satin pleated bands outlined in blue and white piping. This matches the front and back panels. Down the front and back are identical embroidered panels wth a light blue satin background, pink and light green cherry blossoms an d buds with yellow and black stamens and brown branches. Among the cherry branches are birds and a rust colored butterfly. One bird is yellow, green, pink and brown. Below is a pheasant with purple and yellow feathers and a yellow tail. Next among green bamboo leaves are two flying birds, one pink and yellow and the other rust, white, and brown with a purple head and pink feet. The peony below them are pink and green with white and yellow centers surrounded by green leaves. There are two green and rust colored pheasants sitting on a brown and beige outcropping. At the bottom are two white cranes with red crowns, beaks and legs surrounded by two kinds of pink and white flowers with green leaves. These centered embriodered panels are surrounded by the same machine woven ribbon found in the pleated section. There is also three wide bands of black satin surrounding this panel separated by blue and white piping. There is a very deep indigo dyed skirt yolk at the top which has loops and ball buttons. Originally the skirt consisted of two separate panels which are now tacked together with black thread and the eskirt yolk is flde over and has many tucks.the forn t and back panesl and lowers ide painted secitons are lined with blue silk. The inner hem is soiled. On the back of the skirt attached to the yolk is a piece of adhesive tape with "Mrs. Lew G. Kay, black wrap around skirt"
1997.002.011 House Coat Men's House Coat A: Long sleeved purple brocade robe with quilted lapels and cuffs. All over brocade design shows village scenes and trees with green, blue, pink, white, black and orange. Pavilions, boats, bridges, people and foliage. Geometric square and diamond patterns are quilted on the wide, rounded lapels, the wide 3.75" cuffs, and the pocket welts for two lower insert pockets and one small pocket at the chest, left side. A loop of purple satin is stitched to the base of the right lapel and two satin ties an the inside left seam act as a closure. Thin satin belt loops are sewn at the waist, one on each side at the seam. A satin loop is sewn onto the neckline for hanging purposes. The robe is fully lined with purple satin. B: 1.5 " wide belt of the same purple satin as the lining has 5.5 " long purple thread tassels which are knotted. The belt is 62" long, excluding tassels and has a seam near the midpoint.
1997.002.012 Dressing Gown Women's pink silk Chinese style robe used as a dressing gown Long robe with over lapping front made of bright pink silk damask with large butterflies and small flowers. The long sleeves which flare out at the wrists are cut in one with the body. There are front and back center seams and the robe closes on the diagonal with the opening on the right side. Stand up collar has rounded fronts and is trimmed with a machine woven light blue ribbon that has blue stlized roses with beige leaves in the center and textured bands on the outside. This same trim runs around the neck line diagonally across the front and down the right side. It is also found on the sleeve and robe hems. Inside the sleeve hems is a white satin ribbon with woven flying silver, black and red cranes. The robe is fastened at the neck over the collar bone and down the right side with simple frogs made of bright pink silk wrapped with green silk thread ending in ball knotts and loops. On the inside flap is patch pocket. The gown is lined with light blue silk and tacked at intervals to the outside garment. The garment is hand stitched and has few yellow spots on the inside hem and the inside collar is discolored. The inside neck is a white cotton label with "H. Kay" written in black ink.
1997.002.013 Jacket Women's fleece lined brocade jacket Jacket has center front opening shoulder darts in the front and back, long set in sleeves. Cut in two pieces. Hip length body. Stand up collar with rounded fronts, two pockets on outside and two on inside. Short vents on each side of the body. The outside fabric is light yellow brocade with satin background featuring an all over design of a variety of containers in yellow, blue, pink, green, and brown. Some containers have handles and pedestals other have long necks. There are some with three legs resembling incense burners. One motif resembles an altar table with incense burner and cloth next to a stringed instrument. The jacket is lined with a pale yellow fleece which is turned to the out side and acts as a band around the neck, front, sleeve, bottom and pocket openings. There are four sets of frogs down the front which fasten with knot ball and loop. The frogs made of red and yellow satin wrapped around a wire appear to be in the shape of a good luck character? The third frog is mangled and the brocade is deteriorating above both sides of the pockets and on the inner sides of the sleeves.

1997.006.001 Screen Eight Panel Screen Screen of Samurai viewing cherry blossoms while wading in a stream. Each screen is a wood frame covered with paper. Black lacquered or painted wood trim on outside edge of panels. Only end panels have black trim on outside edges. Each outside edge has four wide head nails and in between the nails is an engraved 3.25" metal piece nailed on. The viewing side of the screen is framed by cloth bands which are attached separately to each panel. A 1.25" wide band of emerald green cloth with a tan thread brocade of continuous swastika pattern with eight petal flower design in between them . Alternating patterns of tan dragonflies, and white flowers within a six sided area. A thin .25" band of faded orange fabric with natural fiber weave follows the green band. The painting is in watercolors and depicts a central figure on a horse. He is wearing a black tate eboshi hat, a kariginu - traditional hunting clothes, in light blue with a diamond pattern. He has red underrobes, and grey hakama (Kari - bakama) with white mon. He is in the water on a white horse. The horse has grey spots and is wearing red ( munagai) tassels around the back and front. To the rider's right, in the water, stands a figure with goat-tee, balck eboshi, white kariginu with red trim on sleeve ends ( sode Kukuri), and light blue hakama. To his right with his back to the viewer is a figure in the water with eboshi, orange with green tri- leaf design and light blue hakama. The farthest figure to the right of the horseman is also standing in the water and gesturing towards the shore while looking at the horseman. He is wearing a black tate eboshi, an olive green kariginu, with red sode kukuri. He has grey hakama with white floral design. The rest of the screen on this side is a large cherry tree in bloom on a sloping green hillside with yellow bushes in bloom around it. To the left of the central horseman, in the stream, is an attendant carrying his sword. He is facing the horseman and wearing a red kariginu with peach colored flower designs, green underrobe, and plain light blue hakama. The sword is in a brown scabbard with white handle and red tassels. To the left of the attendant is another figure in the water carrying a covered parasol (?). He wears an eboshi, a plain white kariginu with red sode kukuri and orange underrobe. He has plain light blue hakama. A small cherry tree to his left. All around the painting are cloud forms in a metallic paint.
1997.006.002 Vase Painted and glazed porcelain vase. White porcelain in a tapered figure 8 shape with three separate scenes. From the top, there is a gold painted rim, then a band of green glaze over a black outline of squares within squares. Along the bottom are two painted res ones and then a band of green glaze with black outlined feathers in a repeating motif. The middle of the vase is painted red with intricate gold cloud designs, within this are repeating designs in circles. Two are blue glazed interlocking capital I's; Two with red diamond pattern with four pointed flower design inbetween: Two diamond patterns in red and gold with glazed green and purple windows in between them; Two with green glazed sea waves; Two with yellow glazed hemp leaf patterns. All outline is done in black with some gold outline painted after coloring. One scene is of the Seven Gods of Happiness. There is Ebisu - deity of fishermen and tradesmen, pictured with a fishing pole and sea - bream. He wears a yellow glazed robe. Bishamon - god of militarism carries a pagoda to symbolize his missionary role. He is wearing a green glazed outfit. Hotei - with large belly and large sack behind him. Sack is glazed purple. Benten - frmale repreents art, literature, music and eloquence. She is shown playing the biwa. She is wearing a light blue glazed robe. Daikoku - god of wealth holds lucky hammer which can produce anything. He also has a sack of treasures. He has blue glazed sack, yellow glazed jacket, green glazed pants, and purple glazed sash. Fuku - Rokujin - prophet with long head able to perform miracles. Here he is wearing a cloth over his head, and is holding a scroll. He has a purple glazed robe. Jurojin - god of longevity is an old man accompanied by a crane, blue glazed and has a blue glazed robe and blue glazed tunic. Three children play with a top in the foreground. The second scene is outlined in a jagged black edge with a section of gold on black hemp design. A bird is the center of the scene - yellow breasted, purple head, blue and green feathers, all glazed. The bird rests on a limb covered by a vine. All arounf it are green and blue glazed leaves. A few flowers and leaves are outlined in gold. Gold clouds in the background. The third scene is a landscape, reminiscent of Southern China with sharp, high peaks of yellow, blue, green and purple glaze. A body of water is in the center and a small peninsula of rocks, in yellow, purple and green glaze, has a large tree. A man sits on a boat and fishes. He is outlined in gold. Behind this is a gold outlined two storyed building and a smaller one next to it.

Picture of single man in long canoe or boat paddling along river. Tree branches dominate top of picture, then clouds, setting sun, mountains in the background. Top of picture has characters woven into the fabric and at the bottom, but folded under the frame and the manufactures' seal an S T in an oval ring. Painted in white ink along the bottom are four vertical lines of characters, three on the right and one on the left. In a wood frame, antiqued with mottled edging around the frame with an interior of scrolled edges around smooth flat interior frame. Covered in glass. B: Hang Zhou Western Lake in Autumn. Lake scene with a small pennisula in the center jutting out into the lake. A two story building with curving roof. First story is screened in. Two trees are further out on the penninsula. Two persons are pictued, one is holding a stick, possibly fishing, and one is walking towards the building. The shadow of this scene streches along the water into the foreground of the picture. The top half is dominated by part of a tree's branches and leaves. In the background are mountains, a small isle in the lake and a small boat with four persons sailing on the water. Along the bottom in white ink is a commentary commemorating opening ceremonies for a Taiwanese Association. Woven in right hand bottom corner is N. S. L.O. Woven into the top of the picture are characters giving the title.

Four Chinese characters appear in green. Other side has illustration of tree and grass on land next to water with sanpan boat. In red it reads: "Sampan Room". In green ink are three Chinese characters. On side opposite from striking side reads: "507 Maynard Ave., Seattle, MA2-0366, Japan". Two unused matches inside.

The next circle has five Chinese characters in red. Below that in white is "Seattle Kung-Fu Tai-Chi Association". The next circle has five white petals each with three lines. The center one has a knob at the end. The inner circle has on the bottom a white tiger and on top a white crane. In the very center is a yin-yang symbol, half of which is red and the other white.

1997.017.001 Balance Balance scale in wood and glass case. Case is stained light wood (pine?) with glass top. It is hinged 1/4 way down. The scale mechanism is within the bottom 3/4 and is covered by a sheet of glass which is black except for a band in the middle which displays the gradations. Two shafts protrude through the glass to hold the balance cups [B & C]. The cup holders have pointers which register on a wooden level guage in the center of the scale. It is attached by a metal piece which screws into the glass sheet. On the end of the metal holder is a level bubble to record the level of the scale. On the right side of the box a metal knob protrudes which controls a fork for manipulating the weight on the scale gradation. The bottom of the case has a bottom cornice which angles out. Attached to the bottom are two screw legs extending out to the left and the right. A third leg is under the box in the back. A metal sign on the front indicates the maker: "Henry Tromner Philadelphia, PA., U.S.A. Cap. 4 oz. No. W-33-0CL.A" Serial number 2734. A sticker on the top of the glass, "State of Washington Board of pharmacy weights and Balances". Written on the balance is, "5/4/95 RH, 11/6/96 RH".

B: Pestle formed by solid piece of lathed wood. With long handle slightly thicker in the middle and grooved line around it. End flares out to 1 3/4" diameter with rounded edges.

There is a half ring collar then a straight collar of slatned stripes. Then the jar expands in a tapered egg shape. It tapers to a near hollow stem and flares into a stand. B: Lid is hollow. It is pointed with turning spiral grooves on the acorn shaped top. There is a thin area and then it expands to form a ridge which holds it on top of th jar. 3/4" neck fits into the jar.
1997.017.007 Tray and Cup "Abbott Sanitary Counting Tray". Turquoise tray is flat and has higher sloped edges on two sides. Between those sides is a protruding funnel corner. Opposite that is a cylinder half made of same molder turquoise plastic and the upper or top half clear plastic with gradations. The cylinder opens as there are two pins which attach it to the tray. One end of the cylinder is closed, the other tapers slightly and is open. a circle of white plastic is embedded on the back of the tray. It is visible on the surface in the logo and trade name. On the back is "Pat. 2530.009" and "Do not wash in very hot water or keep near heat". The bottom has bolded legs on one side to match the depth of the cylinder.

Below ingredients list is written, "Net contents 177 ml. (6 fl. oz.), Manufactured for C. Wakefield & Co., Levittown, N.Y. 11756, Established in 1846". One side of the box describes the compound as "pleasant tasting" and says, "Wakefield's Blackberry Balsam Compound is an excellent carminative astringe t for common diarrhea due to food reactions, changes in drinking water and climate. One side of box features directions for using the product, "Directions for use: Dosage Recommended (Shake well before using) -- Adults: 1 tablespoonsul -- may be repeated in 1/2 hour until 4 doses are taken. Children: 6 to 12 years 1/2 tablespoonful, 3 to 6 years 1 teaspoonful. May be repeated as above. Under 3 years of age, consult a physician.
