1987.025.001 Sash One Mien bridal sash of white cotton with needlework embroidery. The narrower embroidered ends are edged with green-couched-in-silver thread. The multi-colored embroidery is arranged in 6 rows of horizontal/vertical stitch, which follows the warp and weft of the cloth with a lacy effect. There are rows of flower and leaf motifs, the last two rows being enclosed within striped borders. The thread used is either pearl cotton crochet thread, emboidery floss, or weaving thread with a sheen. Motifs drawn from the 5 standart Mien patterns. There are also two lozenge-shaped motifs in the center. As far as can be ascertained, there is no mythical or religious significance to the patterns. This sash forms part of the costume of a Mien woman - viz loose fitting pants, ankle length tunic, sash, and turban. The bridal shawl is made by the bride, one for herself and one hand-made.
1987.026.001 Cap One Mien girl's cap of embroidered black cotton. A close-fitting cap of black cloth covered with fine embroidery in the "weaving stitch" (all vertical lines). A large woolen pom-pom encircles the top like a crown, and a ball- shaped one covers each ear. Hand-made. The Thai ethnic group which calls itself "Mien" probably originated in China about 2000 years ago; they use Chinese characters in their writing. The women are skilled embroiderers, producing ornate caps for their children and sumptuously patterned pants for themselves. Surprisingly, they work from the back of the cloth and cannot "see" the pattern until it is turned over. Girls are taught to embroider from the age of 5 or 6. They start with the original (standard) five patterns, and gradually add their to their repertoire as they gain in skill. A mother may make pants and tunic for her daughter when the child is 4 or 5. Girls wear caps until they are 9 or 10, although on festive occasions, even small girls may wear turbans. The costume of a woman consists of loose-fitting pants, ankle-length tunic, sash, and turban.

Two supporting feet extend down from the wooden sole, the rear foot is about 2.25" from the back of the sole plate, it is about 1" thick extending across the full width of the sole. The front of the foot curves in an arc to form the rear of the front foot which is about 2.25" back of the toe. On the bottom of the feet are 4 metal studs, two each front and back. The studs are 7/8" x 3/8" and about 5/8" deep. A nail, which is an extension of the stud, is driven through the top of the sole and clinched over. At the front of the sole is an oval metal plate 2.875" long under which is another metal stud 1/2" deep, 3/8" x 1/2" from which a nail is driven back into the front foot of the wooden sole. The leather upper is made of a finished hide with stitched seams and is nailed to the sides of the wooden sole. From the side the clog appears to tilt slightly down and forward. A leather loop, 1.5" long, extends up from the top of the leather upper. The leather uppers are dried out, have numerous scratches on the surface and the back edges.
1988.024.003 Shoes One pair woven straw sandals. The upper part is woven of single stalks of straw woven in a manner that crosses over in the middle of the sandal. The sides and sole are woven of straw that has been twisted into a form of cord. On the sole, under the heel and the ball of the foot, strips of leather, about 1/8" thick, 1/4" wide, and 2.5-3.5" long, have been woven into the sole, crosswise to enhance the wearing life of the sandals. At the heel the sole cords are wrapped in a circular cone-like shape rising about 2.5" up the back of the foot. It is split in two parts at the top. From each of these parts, a fibrous cord extends about 3" and passes through three twisted straw loops that extend from the side binding of the soles. This fibrous cord serves as part of a lacing system to fasten the sandals to the foot. At the toe, a triangular piece of leather is threaded through the tip of the sandal. A length of the fibrous cord is looped through a hole in the piece of leather and is laced through four twisted cotton cords that extend from each side of the ball of the sandal. The cotton cords are colored in four contrasting colors. The fibrous cord forms part of the sandal laces.

1988.027.002 Skirt Maranao malong landap (wraparound tubeskirt) made of purple silk in plain weave with natural dyes and separately woven decorative strips - langkit. One strip is sewn vertically running the length of the garment - about 15 cm wide and is called lakban. The initials R.M.P. are woven into the lakban at the center. Two identical horizontal strips are sewn parallel dividing the skirt into three equal sections, they are narrower than the vertical and form a pair called tobiran. These strips, consisting of geometric patterns in greens, oranges, and yellows, are exceptional examples of Maranao weaving. A green border is repeated at the top and bottom of the garment, as well as on each side of the tobiran. Border consists of one wide bar with one narrow bar on each side. Piece looks faded as if set in window with front faded, not back. Some of top was wrapped and therefore remained unfaded. Stained throughout with burn hole and a fabric flaw (hole).
1988.027.003 Pants One pair of men's Mien loose-fitting indigo pants made of cotton homespun cloth. There are two matching embroidered panels on each leg. Embroidered panels are attached to a plain non-embroidered indigo gusset; forming a generously cut crotch. Five standard designs are used at the bottom of the pant legs to form the border. Four of these designs use the weaving stitch and the fifth uses the horizonal/vertical stitch (taken from "Peoples of the Golden Triangle" by Paul and Elaine Lewis, p. 138). In front lower leg of pant is a small individually designed square that contains a bow of red, yellow, and green with a beige center. Underneath the square is a small beige cross-stitch in a snake-like design. (This design indentifies the maker of the pants. In the pant leg under there is one item that is stitched in red thread to show imperfection to the Gods.) There is a 5" wide cotton strip forming the waist band, which is hand-sewn to the pants.
