Abstract
A: A letter, 8" X 10.5", written on Smithsonian Institution letterhead to John A. Dean from J.E. Lodge, curator, dated July 30, 1934. It responds to an inquiry concerning the meaning of the letters on a Chinese ceiling tile. B: A memo, 4.375" X 5.375", "From the desk of John A. Dean" on which are copied lettering from the Chinese ceiling tile and an interpretation of their meaning. C: A letter copy, 8.5" X 11", typewritten from John Dean to Curator of The Far East Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York enclosing a monograph and photograph of a ceiling square from the Illi Temple in Jehol, China.
