Hakata Dolls-- 2 Yokozuna Sumo Wrestlers and Referee with fan A: Painted pottery man sitting on his legs, holding military fan in both hands so the fan is horizontal in front of his chest. Black eboshi hat, textured, painted purple cord crosses over top of hat and under chin, tied in bow. Gray short hair, and pointed beard, black feathered eyebrows, black outlined upper lid, brown eyes, red lips. Clothing consists of blue kimono with white quadra circle motif, worker's kimono wrapped tightly around wrist, waistband ties from hakama pants wraps around waist twice at front; on the back are two raised white buttons in the center (sumo crest?). War fan has a black motif in the center, black handle, beige background, red cord and fringe made of clay held in right hand. Fan and eboshi indicate his referee status. On the bottom is a label, gold edged and black background, gold printing "Hakata Mimasu doll, Made in Japan" Adhesive repair on right wrist, paint is chipped off the fan. B: Sumo Wrestler, H: 7.25", W: 6.625", D: 3", painted pottery figure in ritual pose with both knees bent and right hand has palm up and left hand touching large stomach, tan complexion, white nails, black traditional hair pulled to the back and tied with cord (wire wrapped with white paper, coming apart), black eyebrows and eyelashes, brown eyes, red lips, orange nipples; traditional clothing includes a large off-white twisted rope with bow in back, paper Shinto amulets (myoke) hang from rope (one missing) on top of purple apron with red sun rising from blue, green, gold and brown ocean waves, lower portion painted in gold with rope texture, navy blue breech cloth. C: Sumo Wrestler, H: 7.75", W: 6.5", D: 3.625", painted pottery figure in ritual pose with both knees bent and right hand has palm up and left hand touching large stomach, tan complexion, black traditional hair pulled to the back and tied with cord (wire wrapped with white paper, coming apart), black eyebrows and eyelashes, brown eyes, red lips, orange nipples, pink around navel and knees; traditional clothing includes a large white twisted rope with bow in back, paper Shinto amulets (myoke)hang from rope on top of purple apron with red sun rising from blue, green, gold and brown ocean waves, lower portion painted in gold with rope texture, black breech cloth.
