Doll - Artifacts

Description
(a) Doll represents a Kabuki actor playing the Dancing Lion in the play Uagami Jishi. The doll is mounted on a wooden base 14-3/8" x 11-7/8" x 1-1/4". The doll wears a wig of white hair which trails on the ground in the back, a portion of the wig hangs down below the waist on either side of the face. The doll wears a kimono of white silk brocade with gold floral motifs. The upper kimono is offwhite silk brocade with gold, white and rust motifs representing dragons, cranes, clouds and also tortoise shell motifs. He has an outer jacket of silk brocade with a gold and black herringbone background over which are orange, white and light blue-green medallions. The hands of the doll, of wire covered with white cotton fabric, extend out to the sides holding the sleeves. Around the waist a sash of white silk ribbon is tied in a bow in the front with the ends hanging straight down. The top dangling end has three tortoise shell motifs with gold patterns on black background. The right foot is raised in the dance step. The feet are shod in white cotton tabi. (b) case missing
