Description
Donors were given this instrument by friends when they were living in McLean, Virginia in the 1960's. (A) Chinese fiddle. The resonator head is made of a section of bamboo 4.5" long and 2.125" in diameter. The bottom end is open. The top end is covered with reptile skin, bound to the resonator by gold colored silk tape about 1.125" wide. The handle is made of a dark stained bamboo 20" long. At the upper end are wrapped four bands of synthetic filament, each band about 3/8" wide. There are two holes through the handle to insert the pegs for the strings. The strings are missing. (B) A peg to hold and tighten the strings for the above fiddle. It is 6" long, 3/8" in diameter at the small end gradually widening to a bulb shape at the upper end, about 1" diameter. The bulbous upper end is fluted to form 10 segments. The narrow end is slotted to hold the strings (missing). The peg is made of a light colored wood. (C) Identical to (B) above, except that at the narrow end it is pierced by a small hole to hold the strings (missing).
