Description
Ojizosama - Stone Doll Made of soft oya-ishi stone carved with a robe and hands folded in prayer. Wrapped in batting, then placed in a beige crocheted "sock". Over this a knitted sleeveless vest of pink wool with a gray border and with a stand-up collar in the back. Held by a pink crocheted string. Has a silk bag in a floral pattern of red,pink, yellow, green and gray with scattered quilting; flap on top and gold cord tied in a bow. Wears a bib of the same fabric tied around the neck. On head is a large green cotton floral pattern hat with a dark green band around the edge; round-shaped and gathered with a small bell attached. "Ojizosama" is the patron saint of pregnant women, children and travellers. He is seen by the roadside and temples, sometimes in groups. Housewives make bibs, hats and other items of clothing for him. A: stone doll, B: batting, C: crocheted body sock, D: knitted vest, E: string, F: bag and string, G: bib, H: hat
