Doll - Artifacts

Description
Empress Doll used for Hina Matsuri display A: Separate head is made of wood paste and painted white with black hair, two dots on forehead, eyebrows and red mouth, glass eyes. The face is cracked from the nose to the left lower cheek. The black hair is very brittle, gathered in back and extend into 3" tied pony tail. B: The body of the doll in seated position has flesh painted wooden hands held out in front with both elbows crooked. The outer robe is woven of red, orange, brown, purple and white cotton thread and khaki colored paper in striped design. Sleeves are padded and have a red crepe silk edging with embroidery and couched cord floral design. Paper and cotton woven straps attached to shoulders and waist with faded red knotted cords hanging from straps and sleeves; four off-white collars at neckline; red crepe skirt Gold printed white paper glued to doll's back with a white gauze lower extension with printed red flowers. A back train of three padded layers, 2 covered with gold printed white paper and one of gold printed red paper. C: Crown of stamped metal in Chinese style. Phoenix at top with its tail feathers in a flame aureole surrounding a conch shell. Below a horizontal metal floral strip. Head piece has a chrysanthemum on front of head band. Red and glass beads with small metal pieces hang from sides.
