Doll - Artifacts

Description
Pair of dolls: Ministers of the right (udajin) and left (saidai- jin) characterized by an old man and a young man Old man doll A: Pink painted carved wooden face and hands, painted red mouth, inset glass eyes, white synthetic fiber hair tied in a topknot, side whiskers and long mustaches. He sits on a black painted wooden cylinder and his arms are crooked in front of him. Outer robe is of purple and gold brocade in a cloud pattern with dragon medallions, square neck and wide sleeves. At sleeve opening is a white robe bound in black, an orange silk damask robe and a padded white damask sleeve. From waist is suspended a stiff panel of white and light blue zigzags with gold thread floral pattern in center on white background; panel is bound in gold thread and ends in a purple fringe. White damask hakama (pants) bound with orange silk. At the back is a stiff rectangle of white damask bordered in black under a wide stiff black belt. One black painted wooden foot attached. B: black wooden foot broken off. C: Metal symbol: flat with hole and point, cylindrical handle. D: Sword with metal curved blade and white handle with metal fittings center, ending in a point and has a cylindrical handle, held in right E: Scabbard is brown metal with painted gold decoration F: Hat is black painted paper, called Kanmuri with Koji back piece. G: Long red and black bow. H: 5 arrows stuck in brown holder, tied with ribbon. Left foot of A broken off. Young Man Doll I: Head of doll is molded wood dipped in gofun, red painted mouth, black painted mustache, eyebrows and 2 dots on forehead, black fiber hair tied in topknot with blue thread. Outer robe is orange and gold silk brocade in floral design trimmed with black, square neck; at neckline and sleeve openings show white trimmed with black, orange silk and white padded sleeve edges; embroidered front panel of white and blue zigzags with gold floral design in center. White silk damask hakama bound with orange silk. At back is stiff rectangle of white damask bordered in black under a wide stiff black belt. Doll is seated on a black painted wood cylinder; arms are crooked in front. J: Hat is black lacquered paper mache called a Kanmuri with Koji section sticking up at back; rod run through the koji; tie has flap of fabric with hair-like fiber attached. K: Sword: metal blade with a white handle and metal fittings L: Scabbard: brown metal with painted gold decoration M: Bow: long red and black bow tied with white cord N: 5 arrows stuck in a shiny brown arrow holder tied on with white and blue ribbon. The arrows are brown with white shaded to black imitation feathers
