Doll - Artifacts

Description
2 Hina Matsuri male attendant dolls A: Doll's head is made of molded wood paste dipped in gofun which is peeling off; bald head has painted black hair at back, black eyebrows and eyes, red painted mouth. Doll is sitting cross-legged and its white painted carved wooden feet are exposed; the arms are crooked forward with white painted carved wooden hands held in front, peg protruding from right hand. Outer robe of off-white bast fiber is plain woven, short with a self-fabric sash around waist, large sleeves are attached but fall to the back because arms are not in sleeves; sleeve edges have a running stitch in purple silk thread; square neckline. Full pants are in same fabric and gathered at ankles "haribakama". Underrobe is dark blue plain woven silk with "sode-ka kuri", sleeves padded with cotton. The outfit is called "kariginu", originally used for hunting (hawking?) among the peers; later became everyday clothes for peers and military personnel. B: Hat (tate eboshi) of black painted paper, stands on head and tied under chin with black thread. Fan (chukei) missing. C & D: Doll is identical to doll A except that the underrobe is black, the right hand is raised and has no peg.
