Doll - Artifacts

Hina Matsuri "kanjo" court lady doll Meiji/Taisho period - unmarried girl's hairstyle Head is made from molded wood paste dipped in gofun (crushed oyster shells) fine features in good condition, black painted hairline, two dots on forehead, and eyelashes; mouth and tongue once painted red, teeth show; Osagi hairstyle of unmarried woman is black hair pulled back in a bouffant manner tied with string on top and at neck and with a white ribbon at bottom of "pony tail"; small metal flower hair decoration inserted through hair. Inset glass eyes. Doll stands with left arm crooked forward at waist level and right arm extended. Hands are of gofun dipped carved wood; right index finger chipped. Outer robe was once a white brocade lined with paper and embroidered with pink and orange flowers and gold couched lines (silk is badly deteriorated). At the neckline are 5 white underkimono (silk deteriorated, only paper remains and 1 orange underkimono. 2 white underkimono lined with orange are exposed at the back of the large sleeves. Orange hakama covers the robes and is fastened with a self-fabric sash (silk is badly deteriorated and the orange paper lining shows through), the hakama extend under and to the back of the dolls feet. Over the left shoulder is an orange strap knotted in the back (silk deteriorated). Brocade obi stiffener under sash at front.
