Set of 5 Court Musician Dolls for Hina Matsuri Display (Girl's Day) Court Musician Doll A: Separate Head is made of molded wood dipped in gofun; faintly painted eyebrows, red painted lips, inset glass eyes, 5 teeth and tongue visible; Tufts of dark brown hair fiber on either side of head, at front, tied at top, bald at back and upper sides. B: Doll sitting back on his legs, no feet showing, left arm raised to hold drum, right arm forward over lap; hands are painted carved wood. Outer robe and hakama of silk brocade with a blue background and swirling patterns of bamboo and phoenix in rust, brown and silver. Under robe of orange silk crepe show at neckline and at sides of hakama. 3 white damask collars show at neckline; 1 dark blue and a white, black, brown brocade shows at neckline and at sleeve edges. Obi of robe's brocade tied in front bow at waist. C: Drum (L: 1.5", Diam: 1.175"), body is white painted carved wood in hour glass shape with gold painted paper drum heads and tied with fine brown thread Court musician doll, H: 8.5", W: 8", D: 5" D: Separate head on a peg is made of molded wood paste dipped in gofun, faintly painted eyebrows, painted red downturned mouth, inset glass eyes; dark brown hair tufts on each side of head and in back tied with cord. E: Doll is sitting on legs with left arm crooked in front and raised, right arm crooked forward lower than left. Outer robe and hakama of silk brocade with blue background and brown, silver and rust colored swirling patterns of bamboo leaves, phoenix and clouds. Matching obi tied in a bow at front Orange silk crepe under robe shows at neckline and sides of hakama. 3 white damask collars show at neckline; 1 dark blue and 1 brocade of white, black and brown show at neckline and sleeve edges (brocade is padded). Court musician doll, H: 8.25", W: 7.5", D: 5" F: Separate head made of molded wood paste dipped in gofun, painted eyebrows, painted red mouth with teeth, inset glass eyes; dark brown hair tufts on either side of his head, at front and a replacement version at top. G: The doll sits on his legs with the left arm crooked in front and hand raised towards face, right arm extended forward over lap. Painted wood carved hands, no feet. The outer robe and hakama are silk brocade in blue, silver, and rust colored swirl patterns like dolls A-C & D-E, but the upper robe is off the shoulder and hangs down the lower back held the a self-fabric obi tied with a bow in the front. The under robe shows on the upper part of the doll; silk brocade with beige background and brown patterns of trees and phoenix, blue, green and gold flower patterns, gold tortoise patterns, etc. Orange silk crepe underrobe shows at neckline and sides of hakama; 3 white damask collars at neckline, 1 purple silk crepe at neckline and sleeve edges. Sleeves are padded. H: Drum (Diam: 2.25") paper mache drum with gold paint on drum heads. Bound with 8 cords threaded through drum head holes. Insect holes on one side. Court musician doll, H: 13", W: 7", D: 5" I: Separate head on peg is made of molded wood paste dipped in gofun, faintly painted eyebrows, chipped red painted closed mouth, inset glass eyes; dark brown hair tufts on sides and crown tied with white cord. J: Doll body leans back (to sit on a pedestal) with legs extended forward, no feet showing, painted carved wood hands, left arm crooked forward and raised, right arm extending to lap. Outer robe hangs down back from waist and hakama made of silk brocade with a blue background and silver, rust, purple, peach colored design. At back hakama is detached exposing the straw body. The under robe is visible on top in gold, yellow, black, green, blue brocade on beige background with flowers, trees, phoenix and turtles, sleeves are padded. Orange silk crepe under robe is visible at neckline and sides of hakama. 4 white damask collars show at neckline, 1 dark purple one at neck and at sleeve openings. Court musician doll, H: 12:, W: 8" K: Separate head on peg is made of molded wood paste dipped in gofun, painted eyebrows, red painted mouth, teeth showing, inset glass eyes, dark brown hair tufts on either side of head at front, replacement tuft on crown tied with cord. L: Description of body is same as doll 1993.4.24 I-J except that left arm extends to lap and right arm extends out at side of body. The hakama is pulled away at back exposing straw body. Left leg of hakama is torn, insect damage exposing the crude wooden foot. Condition: some insect holes
