Doll - Artifacts

Description
Samurai Doll representing Benkei A: Separate head molded from wood paste and dipped in gofun in red color. Black painted eyebrows in a shape of a U, wide mustache joined at the sideburns, beard. Indication of red painted lips. In-set glass eyes. Cracks at lower back, under chin. Holes at bottom of head to insert onto body. No hair, the top of the head is painted black. B: Body of figure in a squatting position with left leg extending at the left side, right knee bends forward. His right arm is extended forward, elbow raised, hand palm down. Left arm thrusts downward, hand palm side down with thumb and index finger connected. Hand shields of painted paper. Four tier armour on both shoulders, black boards laced with turquoise silk or rayon material . Cardboard armour is painted gold at saw-toothed tops, with decorative clouds and moon. Ornate metal panels at bottom of each section of armour. Armour held by suede shoulder straps and pads of brown with black eight petal flower printed on and off white silk edging. The breast armour is adorned with metal panel which is embossed with cloud and moon patterns. Bottom of panel is irregular. Two irregular circles are curved out. Silk turquoise cords are laced in two tiers, with gold painted on top saw edges of three tiered armour. Two metal bosses with rings in petal shape are attached to armour between first and second panels. The armour is black and has appearance of slats woven vertically. Three additional four panel pieces hang from the waist. Gold, brown, green and white cotton brocade sash is tied in one knot in front at his waist. On his back is gloss black armour with two metal bosses with rings at upper corners of armour. A larger boss is attached at center below the others. A tan cotton string is threaded through three metal rings to hold weapons. Two pieces of armour hang from back waist. On right front end of suede shoulder strap a black three tiered dark blue silk cord laced armour is attached by green cord to the metal floral items with a ring of the shoulder strap. On the left a peanut 'n shell shaped black armour is attached to a metal embossed with a ring by a white silk cord with bows. The shield and armour are made of paper mache and painted in black. Clothing is beige, mocha brown, smoky orange silk brocade with floral - geometric designs. Collar has three layers of white silk beneath outer clothes. At edge of right sleeve is an off-white silk cord laced through the sleeve. Beneath the left sleeve black silk with gold wheel designs. At waist a belt with thickly corded ends are tied in a knot in front. Aqua-green tassels at the end of the belt. The belt is cotton brocade with yellow, green, and white. hakama gathered at the ankles. Brown silk brocade leggings have five metal strips nailed to the top. Back of the legs are covered with paper. Feet have brown damask tabi and straw slippers (Waraj). Red obi with gold design is seen from right side. C: Hood - beige colored silk damask decorated with mustard brocade at edges and center of hood. A triangle is folded in half and sewn together in front. Lined with white silk. D: Weapon Holder- L: 3.25", H" 4.75", W: .5", wood painted black. Attached to post and an upper perforated board with 6 holes painted red. The base is split at the base and on one end a black and red paper case is attached. E: Lance- L: 18 3/8", handle made of bamboo, blade made of metal. A section before the blade is brown painted wood with sand glued on and with three red circles. F: Scythe - L: 17", Bamboo handle and paper mache blade. Painted black. Section before blade has pasted sand and a black painted circle. G: Mallet - L: 18", Bamboo handle and a 1.5" head of wood painted gold and brown. H: Rake - L: 18", Bamboo handle with base pasted with sand and one black painted circle. Rack head is paper mache and has three black painted prongs. I: Saw - L: 17", bamboo handle, wooden base with pasted sand and black circle. head is paper mache and painted black. J: Four Side Saw - L: 17 5/8", Bamboo handle, wooden base with pasted sand. Blades paper mache and painted black. K: Four Side Saw. Same as J. L: Piece of K, saw blade. Condition after freezing: cracks on forehead, back, under chin, right jaw with white underlayer showing in spots
