Doll - Artifacts

Description
Doll representing Takenouchi-no-Sukune A: One piece doll with head molded from wood paste and dipped in gofun (oyster shell powder), painted features and glass eyes. Greyish white silk fiber hair drawn up to the top of the head and tied in a tuft with brown thread. Long prominent eyebrows, moustache and beard made of light colored silk fiber inserted into holes or slits. The figure kneels on left knee with right foot firmly on the ground, right knee upright, arms clasping baby to chest. Outer robe of deep blue kamiko (paper/silk blend) brocade with patterns in gold of cranes, clouds, flaming orbs and double square geometric shapes. Over this robe he wears a breastplate and a black plate. The breastplate is made of paper which has been lacquered black. Below the neck it has a decorative metal fitting with wave and cloud pattern. Below this are three horizontal metal bands between which are off-white braided laces fastened at an angle. In the center is a large circular metal crest of 3 tomoe (commas). The back plate is also of black lacquered paper. In the center is a small chrysanthemum shaped metal boss from which is suspended a metal ring from which hangs two ends of green cord. In the center are four X shaped patterns of off-white braided laces. The front and back plates are supported by a yoke, coming over the shoulders, made of a patterned, folded red fabric outlined by green braided cord. It is fastened to the breast plate by two cherry blossom shaped bosses. It is fastened to the back plate by two plain metal bosses. Extending outfrom the yoke over the shoulders are epaulets in Japanese pine shape. The top layer of the epaulet is black fabric outlined by white and blue cords. A lower, larger layers is of the same fabric as the shoulder yoke outlined by pale blue piping. Fastened under the epaulets and hanging down over the shoulders and upper arms are three sections of black lacquered paper flexible armour joined by off-white braided laces. At the end is a decorative metal fitting like that on the breast plate. Hanging from the front right yoke fastener of the breast plate are three small armour platelets laced together with white braided cord. From the left front yoke fastener hangs a sandal shaped lacquered paper ornament on which is a fancy knot, of white braided silk cord, which ends in a tassel. Around the waist he has a wide sash of purple silk fabric, the ends of which are padded and tied in a knot in the fornt. His hakama is of kamiko (silk/paper blend), brownish color with woven patterns of dragon medallions, cloud and leaf motifs. The hakama is tied under the knees and bloused out. From the waist several sets of flexible armour are suspended, similar to those protecting the shoulders. There are two sets in the front, one over the right hip and two in the back (the one on right rear is missing). Shin guards with fabric backing panels of green, black and gold brocade fabrics separated by metal strips on the right leg. On the left leg the panels are of gold colored kamiko and green and gold patterned kamiko also separted by thin metal strips. The back of the legs are covered with a fine blue silk fabric. The feet are shod in black tabi and straw sandals. The right ankle has a tie of green cord around it, the left ankle has none. The right arm has an under sleeve of green brocade kamiko with floral patterns. The left sleeve is of padded gold colored kamiko. The hands are of flesh colored, painted, carved wood. B: Gold painted paper protective armor for the back of the left hand. It has come detached. C: A three panel set of flexible armour. It is part of the section missing from the right rear of the doll. D: Baby Ojin, L: 4.5", W: 2.75" bottom, 1" at head, D: 1", wrapped in a triangular shaped bundle, carved wood head, gofun coated and painted features. The nose has been chipped away. The wrapping of gold and off-white kamiko fabric with what appears to be a large sized cloud pattern.
