Throw, Table - Artifacts

Large tapa cloth made of the inner bark of a tree (unknown). Medium and dark brown painted design in columns features alternating birds and fish, rows of plants and what appears to be a row of buildings. The geometric design band across the top looks like the words MAMA KAMO repeated. Signed by the artist S. AMIUELA MAHENI on one side. Conservation work done April 1993 by Ruth Vincent to reinforce deteriorating bark cloth. Consists of a light woven cotton backing and nylon netting on front fastened through the three layers by small stitches. Support required to hang in permanent exhibit.
