Description
2 Korean embroidered and painted scrolls A: Picture of two women refining rice; one uses a pestle to pound rice in a hollowed out tree trunk, mortar and pestle have brown embroidered detailing; woman has painted face and hands but her hair and clothing are embroidered, black hair, light blue chokou' with dark blue cuffs and red bow around neck, wearing a pink tchima with large red circle patterns and a white apron. Second woman uses a winnower detailed in brown embroidery, painted hands and face, white chokou' with dark blue cuffs, red bow around collar, dark blue tchima with large round designs, little white shoes with red toe and heel. In front and below her, a pale blue container with painted white interior, probably representing rice; lying on top of this is a brown bowl with brown embroidered outline, painted brown spots indicate the ground below her feet, a row of green and pale blue embroidered plants indicate the ground behind the first woman. Picture is bordered in gold and is on a separate piece of silk which is cream colored. Pink silk brocade mounted on paper, red border, rectangular picture on cream colored silk (6.5 x 8.25") in lower middle of scroll, base of scroll wrapped around wooden dowling with white ceramic caps to weight scroll, at top a small, half wood dowling holds the scroll away from the wall, silk cord is knotted around two nails protruding from scroll's top. B: Picture is painted and embroidered. Two women use small scythe like instruments to cut plants which they place in their baskets, the branches and leaves of a tree cascade behind the standing woman; a mountain in the distance is embroidered in silver thread; below them is green painted ground with detailing dark and light green embroidery; the faces, including hair, of both women are painted as are their hands; the standing woman wears a bluish white chokori with dark blue cuffs and dark fuschia bow, her tchima is dark blue with large circle pattern and has a white apron, she holds a brown basket with embroidered detailing. Kneeling woman wears bright yellow chokori with dark blue cuffs and red bow, her tchima is dark pink with red circle patterns, she rests her hand on a brown basket with embroidered detailing while using her other to cut plants with her small scythe. Picture is bordered in gold and is on a separate piece of silk which is cream colored. Aqua silk brocade scroll mounted on paper, cream paper border. Rectangular picture (6 x 7.25") situated in lower middle of scroll, base of sscrolls wrapped around wood dowling with white ceramic caps to weight scrolls, top is wrapped around half wood dowling to hold scroll away from wall, silk string knotted around two nails protruding from top of scroll.
