Description
FOLDING FAN. SILK ON WOOD FRAME strips of wood composing fan are wide at base and become narrow where they support the silk laid over them. silk is pleated between each strip of wood. water scene painted on silk. five pairs of red and blue figures sit in canoes on the water (applied with blue wash). one flat boat with canopy has three figures. three islands, two have identical red temple complexes and green trees, third has only trees. sea birds fly overhead. on right hand edge is a column of Chinese characters. a trim of metalic leaf runs along the top edge of the silk. hollow metal core punches through all wooden strips near bottom and connects them. this creates a hinge by which the fan can open and close. a cream colored string is threaded through this metal core.
