Ledgers, Letters, Announcement - Artifacts

Description
Ledgers associated with the Yee Goon Company (725 S. King. St.), a gathering place for Woos. A: Ledger, H: 10", W: 10.5", D: 1.5", dark blue cover made from a single sheet of linen reinforced paper, bound with dark pink cord which has been tied through 6 small holes to secure the pages within; cover backed by heavy beige paper also used for end pages. Pages are printed with dark pink columns headed with numbers written in Chinese characters. Various Chinese characters in black ink have been written on half of the book. The lower bottom end of the book has a series of characters also written in black ink. "1935, Meals and Expenses" showing various companies names associated with meal charges and other expenses. The spine has a label which is partially missing. The middle left edge of the back cover has a rectangular label attached to it reading "Made in China". "1932, Products or Goods". The top end of the book has "Made in China" stamped in it in red. The ledger has various correspondence letter in it as follows: G & H: 2 page Letter, H: 10.5", W: 9.5", written on the letterhead of "Yuen Loong Shing" of Hong Kong; printed red column lines; Chinese characters along right edge; upper edge printed in red and has the address of the business printed in English "73, Bonham Strand West, Hong Kong". G has 15 columns of Chinese text written in black ink, and H has 7 columns of Chinese text written in black ink and a series of characters stamped in red. The pages were once folded in half. Translation by Lanting Huang: this is a correspondence letter from Yuen Loong Shing in Hong Kong discussing the goods that they are sending overseas to Yee Goon Company. Yuen Loong Shing will buy the goods and ship them out on March 10, 1932. The letter mentions how they will pack and preserve the goods such as smoked duck, leechi, ceramics and other foods. The letter also mentions the war between China and Japan. It notes that the Chinese army won a victory on March 2, 1932. Translation of the full letter: To Mr. Yuan Hui of Yi Yuan: Hope you are doing well! I have received the letter from Mr. Yu Han and enclosed order form. I will try to take care of the order and send the merchandise via Wattson President Ship which will be leaving on the 19th of March. If there is no delay, you will receive them on time , please don't worry about it. This is not a good season for dried ducks, there are not many people making them now. Even there are some, but their qualities are not very good. There will be good dried ducks in the winter time when the weather is dry and the northern wind is blowing.. I am sending 20 jars of ginger candy and leechi cans. It may not be a good idea to keep this two merchandise toghther, I am afraid that the ceremic jars will be brocken if They are put together with the metal leechi cans. So, I kept this two items in different boxes. i will send you the list of the merchandise and the account of the transaction. The relationship between China and Japan has been very bad. The Chinese army has been getting victory. The Japanese soldiers are not getting what they want.The chinese people are very angry about the Japanese and they are trying their best to support the soldiers at the front line and ready to join the soldiers for long term combat.The sceneries in Hong Kong and Mainland China are as usual. I am not able to tell you everything in detail, Wish you well.The letter was dated March 2, 1932.{The date and the signature are written on the left three lines away from the main text.The date is written in two columns, on the left column is the lunar calendar, on the right is March 2, the 21st year of Republic of China(1932). Under the date is the signature of the writer with the red stamp of the company(Yuen Loong Shing). I: Receipt, H: 10.25, W: 8.125", from Yuen Loong Shing Company dated February 5, 1932; yellowed paper with a series of columns in a rectangle printed in dark pink; 4 columns of Chinese text have been written in black ink; 3 stamps of various Chinese characters in red; page has holes along its left and right sides; once folded in half. Translation of the Note: The last balance from March 16 is $649.55 dollars. On December 19, $20.41 dollars was sent from mainland was added to the balance. The total saving in the account is $669.96 dollars. This is the account of Yi Yuan company.This report was written on February 5th, 1932. This is a purchase list. Following is the translation of the list: A list of bills from Mainland China First column upper: Feb. 21, from Guang Mei $8.23 lower: April 21, from Fu Long $ 5.82 Second column upper: April 21, from Heng Ha $3.94 lower :from Guang De Long $14.63 Third column upper: from Sheng Yi $2.41 lower: may 9th from Lee Jin Ji $5.75 Fourth column total $40. 82 ( I added the amount listed above, not exactly this number) Yuan Long company $20.41 Yi Yuan company $20.41 dated Feb. 5th, 1932 K: Envelope, H: 4", W: 6.5", right side torn off. Front has "Yee Goon and Co., 725 King Street" written in black ink; upper left corner has an oval stamp of Yuen Loong Shing with its address "235, Wing Lok Street, West, Hong Kong"; below is another stamp in red of variou Chinese characters; next to this are 3 columns of Chinese characters in black ink; The Chinese characters are translated as: first column from righr-Seattle Wa, second column from right-Yi Yuan Hao, third column from right-Mr. Hu Yuan Hui ( the receiver) upper right corner has 20c Hong Kong stamp in green and purple; blakc postmark stamp on top of it. The back has a postmark stamp from Hong Kong dated March 4, 1932. Red seal on the left is the company's name (Yuen Loong Shing in Hong Kong) The addressee is Mr. Hu Yuan Hui of Yi Yuan Hao in Seattle. L: Receipt, H:10", W: 7.125", from the Yuen Loong Shing Company to the Yee Goon Company, dated May 1932, in the amount of $2770.09 (HK or US?); yellowed paper with a series of red column lines, letterhead in red; characters along left and right edges, address at the top; 9 columns of Chinese text in black ink and a red stamp of Chinese characters. Translation of the letter: To; Yi Yuan Hao( the name of the company) Mr.?uan Hui: I have received 2770.65dollars( Hong Kong money) from Mr. Wu Yu Han. I will send back the extra money deducted from the expense on the merchandise you purchased. Please don't worry. In the future, if you have to order any merchandise, please let me know. I will do whatever you instructed.Wish you do well in your business.The red seal at the end of the letter, on top of the signature said: Hong Kong, wing Lok West, Yuen Loong Shing stationary. On the left side of the letter is the date May 5th , the 21st year(1932) of The Republic of China. O: Letter, H: 10", W: 6.25", yellowed paper once folded in half, letterhead of the Yuen Loong Shing Co. printed inred, column lines, Chinese characters at bottom, Chinese characters and address of company at top, 7 columns of Chinese text written in black ink, red stamp of various Chinese characters. Translated by Lanting Huang: Mr. Woo Yu Han (?) at the Yuen Loong Shing Company in Hong Kong wrote Mr. Wood Yuen Huey (?) of the Yee Goon Company in Seattle a thank you letter. Woo wrote that he received $2770.09 (HK or US?) and thanked the other for the business. Dated May 1932. Full translation of the letter: Mr. YuanHui and Guan Zhan I have received 2770.65 dollars you have remitted on March 4th to pay for the merchandise you ordered. Thank you very much. Last time you sent the credit ticket, I am sending it back to you, Please clear this transaction. N: Announcement, 4.25 x 9.5", written in black on red paper with 4 columns of Chinese characters; once folded in half; 2 small holes at top. This is the note from the Yee Goon Company on January 4, 1935 that invited partners of the company to its annual finance meeting at 11:00 p.m. on January 7, 1935. NOTE: STORED IN ARCHIVE FILES
