Description
Tea kettle (chagama) with lid and portable brazier (furo) for tea ceremony (chado). A: Brazier, H: 9.5", Dia: 11.5", made of cast iron in a bowl shape which narrows near the top and has a standing rim. On two sides are cloud shape openings and there are three sets of three open slots in the rim. Attached on two sides are handle holders in the shape of a creatures head with a hole through which two metal rings hang. There are three comb shape legs which are part of the body that raise the brazier off the floor. The brazier is filled with gray charcoal ash. There are six pieces of charcoal on the ashes. B: Kettle, H: 5.75", Dia: 8", chagama is made of cast iron in a bowl shape tha t narrows in towards the top and has a standing rim. A ridge has been cast around the center of the kettle. The surface has a rough texture. On two sides are handle holders cast in the shape of creature heads with a hole in the center. An open ended ring is inserted through these holes on each side. On the inside are three iron patches, one of which is loose. C: Kettle lid, H: 1", Dia: 4.5", made of a smooth metal possbly brass, the round top is a mottled brown color and has a handle in the shape of two cupped flowers creating a knob that is attached with a brass rivet. Beneath the knob are five raised petals. The underside of the lid has a ring shaped flange which fits into the open top of the kettle. The bottom is black color. D: Jar of charcoal ashes, 9.25", Dia: 5.75", tall clear glass jar with white metal lid contains gray ash for the charcoal brazier.
