Description
Battledore - Hagoita with padded figure Wooden paddle is carved and is wider at the top and narows to a handle. On the front is a padded figure covered with silk fabric. The shapes are made of card covered and glued together. The figure is a woman with painted features, black satin hair and an elaborate headdress made of gold crinkled paper, gold and orange brocade, a silver foil flower, and a silk orange cord tied under her chin. Her kimono is made of orange and gold brocade, and the rest is made of green and gold brocade, purple and gold brocade, and yellow crepe. In her right hand, which is made of white silk and painted with pink features, is a paper fan with red bamboo leaves, gold edging and a black handle. The figure projects from the board held in place with wooden dowel and the bottom is nailed. The background is made of card covered with white silk. which is painted with pink and gold cherry blossoms and green leaves. The handle is covered with black corderoy. Print of basket at lower area of back.
