Seven paper back volumes, "Japanese Fairy Tale Series" Various editions published in English between 1885 - 1889. Tokyo: T. Hasegawa, Kobunsha. A: Bound on left in two places with light blue cord, "Momotaro" printed in red on front cover which has a colored wood block print of a Japanese warrior banging on a gate while his three helpers, a pheasant, a dog and a monkey dressed in clothing, look on. The back cover has yellow and white pheasant design. Written in English with colored wood block print illustrations. B: Bound on left binding cords missing, tan cover with white label printed in English and Japanese, "Japanese Fairy Tales: Momotaro," Published by Kobunsha, No. 2, Minami Sayegicho, Tokio, 1885 written in pencil. Written in english with black illustrations. Worm holes in interior pages which are loose. C: Bound on left in two places with silk cord, label on front "Japanese Fairy Tale Series, No. 3, Saru Kani Kassen, (2nd edition), Teh colored wood block print shows a rice mortar and pestle with arms and legs, a small boy with an egg head and an insect (bee). Title page "Battle of the Monkey and the Crab", Flyleaf, 1885 - 1886 in pencil. Written in English with colored wood block print illustrations. Extensive worm hole damage. D: Bound on left Japanese style, Front cover "Japanese Fairy Tale Series, No. 9, Yamata - no - Orochi," Told in English by B.H. Chamberlain, Published by the Kobunsha, to Minami Saegicho, Tokyo." Colored wood block print of eight headed dragon extends to the back cover. Inside first page, beneath sun illustration, " The Serpent with Eight Heads." On the flyleaf " 1886" written in pencil. Written in English with black and white illustrations which have color accents. Extensive worm hole damage. E: Bound on the left in two places with silk cord. "Japanese Fairy Tale Series, No. 10. The Matsuyama Mirror. Told to Children by Mrs. T. H. James. Published by T. Hasagawa, 10, Hiyoshicho, Tokyo." Colored illustration on front cover of a woman dressed in robe sitting on a bench with girl on her lap and a mirror in left hand. Inside the flyleaf 1886 written in pencil. Written in English with colored illustrations. F: Bound on the left Japanese style, "Japanese Fairy Tale Series, No. 13. the Silly Jellyfish. Told in English by D.H. Chamberlain. Published by the Kobunsha, to Minami Sagicho, Tokyo." Front cover colored illustration shows monkey on jellyfish in the sea with nearby town and two turtles watching. Written in English with color illustrations. Worm hole damage. Binding cord is broken. G: Bound on left Japanese Style, "Japanese Fairy Tale Series, No. 18. The Ogre's Arm. told in English by Mrs T.H. James. Kobunsha, Publishers, 3, Maruyacho, Tokyo." Colored wood block print on front cover shows samurai on horse and an ogre grabing him from above. Written in English with colored wood block print illustrations. Worm hole damage. Broken binding cord. Set held together by pink cotton tie knotted through metal disk.
