Description
Basketry vase with metal insert used for nageire style Ikebana flower arrangement. A. Short basket with rounded shoulders narrowing at bottom with ring shaped foot. Bottom and sides are a hexagonal weave of narrow split bamboo strips. Around the base the ring foot is wrapped and attached to the body with thinner bamboo strips. The hexagonal weave on the sides has three horizontal weavers and wider strips of bamboo have been inserted diagonally into this weave following the hexagonal weave and overlapping at the rim to create a finished edge. The U-shaped handle is formed from two narrow strips of bamboo with nodes at the apex. They are inserted into the weaving on two sides. The basket has been coated with a sooty finish and polished on the outermost parts of the weavers to give it an antique look. On the bottom the donor's name "Uno" has been pressed into black vinyl tape. B. Metal can with straight sides and a lip around the rim with kenzan needle flower holder adhered to the inside. The whole piece has been spray painted brown. On the bottom are printed "F07081/V1ES13". Basket made in Japan.
