Description
Basketry vase with water glass insert for nageire style Ikebana flower arrangement. A. Tall hexagonal-cylindrical bamboo basket with flared neck and wide rim. Stained dark brown with gray paint in the crevices to create an antique look. The sides are woven narrow bamboo strips in a diagonal weave creating diamond shapes on each side with a chevron border surrounding. The neck has a diagonal twill weave. The basket is decorated and support with wider strips of bamboo nailed to the base, the lower neck and the rim. Six shaped vertical strips are added to the sides to emphasize the hexagonal shape. These are bound to the middle of the sides by thin bamboo strips. The rim has a fine wrapped bamboo top attached and wrapped in eight places with bamboo strips. The U-shaped handle is formed from three wide bamboo strips which taper at the ends and are braided to the rim and sides of the basket. The handle is wrapped in three places near the top. The inside is reinforced with matching bands at the lower neck, the middle and at the base. The bottom is a hexagonal slice of wood which has been glued into the two strips of bamboo at the base. On the bottom is a white label with pink flowers indicating the name of the donor, "Uno", and her address. B. A long stemmed glass with a flared rim and cut design on lower sides and plain round base. The stem has six facets. Molded raised lettering on the bottom reads, "Italy". Used to hold water for flower arrangement. Basket made in China.
