Description
Decorative bamboo miniature roof used for Ikebana flower arrangements. Ridge pole is made from a length of bamboo with nodes at each end. The ridge pole is connected to the roof sides with wire and three pieces of braided bamboo. The roof extends down on either side at a sharp angle and is made of flattened sections of bamboo joined to smaller vertical bamboo strips with very narrow strips of bamboo which are woven in and out over the vertical strips. Near the bottom, two horizontal strips of bamboo are held to the roof sections by very narrow strips of bamboo which are laced in a X-shaped design. At the ends of these horizontal strips are four braided strips of bamboo which act as fasteners and as decorative elements. The roof has been stained dark brown and lacquered on the outside. The roof was used with two baskets (1997.30.205) to create a hanging arrangement in which the baskets were suspended from a pulley and the roof rested above the pulley. There is a crack in one end of the ridge pole.
