Doll - Artifacts

Description
Hina Matsuri Doll Couple Seated Emperor doll. (A-E) A: The removable head is molded of wood paste and dipped in gofun (egg-shells) Painted black hairs and eyebrows, red mouth and glass eyes. Black silk thread hair tied in topknot with purple thread. B: Robe is woven with a cotton orange warp and brown paper strip weft; supplementary weft floral designs in rust, white, purple and green. The robe has a squared neck at the front panel with 5 white dots with khaki cord around edge attached with orange thread. At the neckline are 3 white linen under robes; next is paper and orange thread robe and last is a paper and white thread robe. Wide stiff sleeves are padded and have long white stitches at cuff. Undersleeve of paper and white threads, then orange fabric and then smaller cuff of paper and white thread fabric. The hirao panel with white dots is edged with orange and the section below the waist is striped enclosed in a raised border of painted brown paper with a glued rectangle of brown paper and orange thread in a floral design. At back is white cotton glued on with a band of brocade crossing at waistline. "Hana Go" five flower is printed on bottom of doll and some initials. C & D: two white painted wooden hands broken from doll. Seated Empress Doll (F-I) A: Head is made of molded wood paste dipped in gofun; painted eyebrows and two dots on forehead, red lips, glass eyes. Black and brown human hair pulled back with tarashi (ponytail) wrapped around paper, tied with thread B: Robe of cotton orange thread warp and brown paper weft with supplemental cotton weft in red, green, yellow, purple and white floral design. At neck are 5 gray brocade under kimono, one purple and one of paper and cotton warp. Front of upper kimono has a crossed squarish band and front panel; below waist is a stiffened "apron" with red border, white cotton border, red inner rectangle with crossed paper strips. Black cotton strip down back crossed at waist and upper shoulder with paper strips. Stiff padded sleeves have edging of red and brown strip, and a brown and beige strip and a protruding padded sleeve of brown and beige. C: Crown of thin metal, formerly gift, with large open circle on headband. Chinese style with phoenix on top with Buddhist flame and phoenix tail feather behind. At sides are dangling beads and small metal squares. Tied under chin. D: Fan of thin wood slats fastened at bottom with wooden peg. Top is connected with peach and green cotton threads. E: Black painted paper mache hat with chipped paint, Kanmuri style in poor condition, H: 1.625", W: 1.375"
