Doll - Artifacts

Boy's Day Dolls - Momotaro Conquering Ogre A: Momotaro figure, H: 8", W: 5", gofun dipped face, painted black eyebrows, pursed lips painted red, pink around set-in glass eyes, crease on each upper eyelid, hint of indentation under lower lip, vertical crease on the center of upper lip. Hair is made of black silk fiber, tied at the top of crown with white folded paper, tied at both sideburns with black silk thread, length of hair at back is shorter than sides, cut into a V shape. Right leg rests on the back of an ogre, left leg is stretched out. He wears an outer vest (jinbari) made of red silk with supplemental weft of paper thread in blue grey floral and vine motif; two bands of grayish green silk brocade are attached to the front of the vest, lined with stiff glued paper. Metal pinheads are pounded at each upper corner of the green band. Two horizontal bands of brown circular design of "three commas" on black background. The coat is split at the center back and sides; edges of splits and sleeveless arms are piped with olive green suede like paper with white patterns. Both sides are laced with purple silk cords. Immediately below the vest is a full set of body armor; top and bottom layers of chest armor are laced in green, middle layer in white silk thread, two metal bosses in gold in chrysanthemum flower shape with rings in center are attached on the chest armor at breast line. Below the bosses, brown and lack leaf stencilled paper vest ties are attached over the armor with a metal tack. Both shoulders are covered with two-layered moveable black lacquer paper guard, each layer is joined with laced green silk thread. Bottom edges are laced with red silk in X mark design below the armor purple brocade Kimo with supplementary weft in gray paper in vine and chrysanthemum motif. The sleeves are tied with beige cord at wrists. Hands are painted in balck with yellow and red dotted floral design indicating gloves. Three apron-like armor panels hang from waist at front and two at back. The armor is made of black lacquered paper, two layers joined by white and green silk thread, accented with red silk thread in X marks at bottom. Beneath the apron-like armor at front. Two stamped copper colored metal upper leg guards are glued to black and white cotton prints which suspend from waist. Apple green damask silk pants are tucked inside the cotton leggings of black and beige print of "3 commas". Copper socks (tabi) have stenciled green and red cherry blossom soles and finished with solid yellow cotton, but right sole finish is missing. Yellow thread is wrapped around the feet to secure the footwear. At the waist is a white silk satin belt, wrapped around and braided at front. He wears a long sword (tachi) with green cord wrapped around the handle and beyond the scabbard, white cord is tied around the sword to secure it to the front of the waist. B: Ogre figure, L: 8", W: 4", D: .625", is stretched out on the ground; left arm and right leg extend out, right elbow and left knee are bent, body is painted in reddish tan, indentation of muscle painted in darker color. Hands are paw-like in shape. Long white sharp horns extend from the corners of the forehead, yellow glass eyes are large, deep crease between the eyebrows which are painted with pale black upward strokes, nostrils flared, mouth opened, saw-like sharp teeth exposed, red tongue hanging out, cotton navy loin cloth is wrapped around the waist and loins with a flat knot in back. Ogre is flat on his stomach. C: Platform, H: 2", W: 9.5", D: 5.75", wood with black lacquer, front has curved facing and legs remaining on 3 sides are left plain. Three wood pegs are pounded to place dolls for display. D: Sword, H: .125", W: 2.375", D: .25", short, made of wood with a black lacquer scabbard, white handle; gold on top, bottom and one stroke design at middle of the handle.
