Doll representing a monk A: Separate head molded from wood paste and dipped in gofun (oyster shell powder), H: 2", W: 1.5", D: 2". Painted features and inset glass eyes; unshaven stubble painted on chin and cheeks; red painted mouth turned down; raised eyebrows and deep wrinkle in forehead. A few brittle black fibers show where there was once hair. Whole top of head is smooth an bald and hair used to be attached to a thin slot in front of each ear and one which runs perpendicular to them over the ears and across the back of the head. B: Body has right arm extended to the side; fingers curve to meet the thumb as if he once held something; left arm curves in so that hand hovers in front of chest; right leg bent at knee, foot flat on ground; left leg bent inward with bottom of foot turned to face upward; wood hands and feet dipped in gofun. Monk's robe of dark brown velvet, front crosses over chest and tucks into trousers; long kimono sleeve lined with orange silk chirimen crepe. Inner robes showing at neck are green silk satin and white silk satin (innermost). Pants which gather at the bottom are white silk gauze which has yellowed over time. Gauze back belt. Conditions: Head, hands and feet are chipped, head cracked in front down right and across the top beginning at openings in front of ears. Gauze is brittle and crumbling. Velvet pile has rubbed off in spots, right sleeve ripped in front, hole at top and on left sleeve shoulder.
