Description
Doll representing Bodyguard A: Head molded from wood paste and dipped in gofun (oyster shell powder), painted black eyebrows, lashes, inset glass eyes, blank, expressionless face. Painted black short western style hair, parted on left side. Figures stands erect with left foot out on heel, right arm holding sword, left arm at waist. Clothing consists of painted papier mache armour, large collar piece painted gold with red design, edged with gold and black cord on inside and outside. Shoulder epaulets of carved, painted wood mask shapes with shishi faces painted blue with gold features and red upper lip. Body armour is painted gold with blue, green and red designs and outlined with same gold and black cord. Around waist is a leather belt painted gold and on the front is carved wood animal face (shishi) with brown silk sash hanging straight down, with a gold and black tassel. Underneath armour is a red silk robe with white painted motif. Forearm armour of gold painted paper tied on by red double cords. Train (kyo) on back of same red cloth as underrobe, lined with red silk. Split skirt (hakama) of gold colored silk damask with gold metallic thread motifs. Red silk brocade with gold metallic motif leggings. Gold painted paper shin guards tied by red cords. Painted white wooden shoes with black diagonal strips. Arrow quiver of painted wood attached to back, painted gold with green, red designs, arrow feathers in white and black. Curved sword scabbard of metal painted black with two painted gold bands and one at opening which is metal, metal loops are tied by cord around waist. Nailed to stand covered by blue green aqua silk. B: Helmet, H: 1.875", W: 2.75" painted papier mache, gold inside, has red cord with tassels to tie under chin, helmet flares out in back, has winged motif on front and is topped with ornament (which is breaking off), painted gold with red and silver details, scale and cloud designs, front shape is broken. C: Sword, L: 5", slightly curved, plain corroded silver blade, tsuba guard in shape of usu (mochi pounder), metal rustic handle. Conditions. Gofun on top of right foot cracked. Paper armour is in poor condition with paint peeling. Helmet has lost part of winged motif and top ornamentation damaged, cord coming off collar armour; gofun missing on tops of hands. Crack in head by ears down to neck, back armour cracked.
