Doll - Artifacts

Description
Doll depicting a seated male with fierce expression A: Separate head molded from wood paste and dipped in gofun (oyster shell powder), painted red lips, corners of the mouther and upper eyelids are tinted peach color, curved nostrils, wrinkles on chin, mouth and eyes, painted gray area around chin, black fiber eyebrows and moustaches. Black furry fiber hair cropped short in Ronin style. B: Body in kneeling seated position (Japanese style), left hand open and right fingers curled to hold a fan (missing). Clothing consists of green silk and gold paper brocade outer kimono and hakama pants; sleeves of the green robe are lined with orange silk crepe and a smaller orange silk crepe sleeve beneath is embroidered with blue and white and yellows flowers, green leaves and faded gold cord couching. Beneath is an orange silk crepe robe with peeling gold cord couching seen as a collar at the neck. 3 other collars beneath which have detetiorated so that white paper stiffening shows through. Belt of the same faber is tied in a bow at front. From the belt hangs an off-white, black speckled tobacco container held by an orange cord with a bead. Condition: paper fiber is worn and the collars have deteriorated.
