Doll - Artifacts

Description
Standing doll wearing armour and wearing an antler headdress, on base possibly figure of Kusunoki Masashige, loyalist of late Kamakura period. A: Separate head molded from wood paste and dipped in gofun (oyster shell powder) peeling around eyes, dark flesh color, blue shaven areas above forehead and on chin, black painted feathery eyebrows and mustache, red painted pursed lips, slanted brown eyes, high bridge nose, frowning features. Coarse black fiber hair pulled up into a pony tail tied with white thread. Wooden sharpened peg fits into body. B: Standing body with one foot forward, right arm held up holding sword, left arm straight down. Black paneled armor on shoulders with green lacing and decorated with red lacing on lower section, panels joined with ivory cords. Upper panel made of paper mache with black dots, tied to the body at the collar with purple cord. Back of armor is smooth black enamel on paper mache with metal boss in shape of chrysanthemum and a ring at the center. Chest armor is paneled and laced with green cord and X laced red cord at top; at middle on both sides is a metal boss. 3-panelled lap protector and 2-panelled derriere protector which hangs around his waist, decorated with green cord and X laced at bottom with red silk cord and all joined with ivory silk cords. On top of his armor around his waist is an off-white belt made of silk gauze. Beneath the armor is his top is covered with silk brocade made of red floral and crane design on purple background; sleeve opening tied with off-white silk cord and loose ends hang down. Two undergarment collars in white show at neckline. Pink silk pants are tucked into beige and purple motif leggings and black enameled paper mache shin guards; above the right ankle is an orange flat woven tie. Both swords are made of wood with metal sword guard and handle tips; smaller sword on right has a painted brown scabbard, only small amount of paint remains on sword; larger sword on left attached to the body by a purple silk cord at waist back has black painted scabbard, ring beneath cap holds a orange silk cord, handle decorated with flat olive green ribbon making an X-mark design around the handle. C: Helmet made of paper mache with black lacquer, painted lavendar inside, antlers on both sides (ends are chipped off), Hachiman guardian protector marking on helmet made of metal, front brim is made of a geometrically design brown paper which match the two rounded flared panels on each side trimmed with metal strip in center and 2 X red lacings; above the brim is a brown painted metal animal face with ears and gold painted horns and eyes; two panels drape from the crown attached with a black silk cord, the bottom of the panel is decorated with red cord in X design; attaches to head with red cord. D: Rectangular wood base with open back, black lacquer, decorative carving creates legs at front.
