Doll - Artifacts

Description
Doll depicting large standing Hideyoshi A: Separate head molded from wood paste and dipped in gofun (oyster shell powder), pinkish complexion, painted black upswept eyebrows and upper eyelashes, painted light gray side hairline; painted red closed lips; large inset glass eyes, brown; bald pate, black silk fiber hair (deteriorating) swept up into topknot. B: Standing body supported by a 16.25" slat of kiri wood in nailed to the back waist (no base) (black kanji at the bottom is translated as "man"), left foot forward, right arm bend slightly forward, left arm down at side with palm upward. Wood paste hands are dipped in gofun and painted blue with beige grass motifs; hand guards are made of paper card covered with gold brocade. Clothing consists of a Jimbaori vest (open slit at back) of blue silk brocade with various abstract dragons in light gray with gold eyes coming out from black waves and repeated blue dragons, blue and gold insects and butterfly sparsely covering the cloth; front lapels of tan silk brocade with tiny floral design in blue and olive colors, gold band along upper edges at shoulders, olive corded loops extend from gold band as a jimbaori closing; white and beige diamond silk trim around lapels, armholes and hem; lined with purple cotton. Beneath the jimbaori is a black and gold silk brocade sleeves and collar, kiri (palownia) motif, sleeves tied with brown cord at the wrist and are stuffed with cotton and stiffened with paper. Around the neck are two layers of gray habutae silk collars. Armour consists of a breast plate made of papier mache coated with black lacquer with molded vertical ridges and laced with brown flat silk cord in X shapes, a mauve silk flat cord is laced across at the top, bottom and middle of this section, in the center is a kiri mon made of gold painted engraved metal (three leaves and three flowers--center has 7 blossoms and side ones have 5--"5-7"), top of the section of papier mache printed with blue and white geometric designs, gold lame edging; breast plate is suspended by a silk brocade strap with a greenish blue, purple and white floral designed fastened with blue silk cords which are decoratively knotted across the chest. Below the waist the armour is made of two panels of papier mache tiers coated with black lacquer and laced with flat silk brown cord and at the bottom is blue cord, decorated at the bottom with metal edging in a cloud motif and supported by gold finished paper, joined to the panel with silk maroon cords. Beneath this are two cloth panels made of maroon silk damask and decorated with six rectangular gold lame pieces laced with off-white silk flat braid in X and horizontal lines; suspended from the waist by a cord. Gold brocade .hakama are stuffed and gathered at the knees. Shin guards have 4 "moko" (cucumber) shaped paper slats, gold paint on white and laced with brown silk cord in X shapes and tied at the top and bottom with a olive colored cord tied in bow in front; beneath this the legs are wrapped with the gold brocade. Wood carved feet are covered with dark blue sueded paper or fabric to represent tabi socks; waraji straw sandals are tied to his feet with flat brown cord through the toes and around the ankles. Stuffed off-white silk damask belt knotted at the waist in front Condition: Half of the hair is missing and continues to deteriorate, face is cracked badly especially at the hairline at the right and and a large piece is missing from the left cheek. Left index finger is chipped; right small finger is missing. Jimbaori is deteriorated and has a large tears in the back, worn at left front, faded. An armoured panel is missing from waist. Soiled and stained belt. Collar is worn. Gold lame decoration is deteriorating, shin guards are partially torn, especially on the left, fabric ends of big toes are worn off.
