Description
Straw Dance Hat from Sado Island The hat is made from sedge stems which are tied in the center and radiate out to the edges. the spokes are held by sedge that is twined in a spiral. At the crown and the rim purple dyed sedge is woven as a decorative element. A red cotton tie is threaded through the sedge and crosses over the top and to the inside and the ends hang to tie under the chin. The hat has been folded in half and is worn in this manner for folk dancing.
