Dress - Artifacts

Description
White pina cloth (pineapple fiber) woman's dress. The dress is short-sleeved, drop-waisted, with a sailor-shaped collar which has a pin-tucked insert down the front. There are grape leaves, vines, and and grapes embroidered along the collar and hem. The gathered skirt has a stitched and corded scalloped hem. Grapes are embroidered evenly scattered across skirt, and a grape is embroidered into the center of each scallop. Lace is sewn around the collar and sleeves. The sleeves are attached to the body of the dress using fagotting. Fagotting also is used to attach the back collar to the front and borders the pin-tucked insert down the front. The back waist is pin-tucked horizontally at 1/2" intervals for 2". The dress is opened at the left side, and is fastened with snaps. (A hook is used to secure the waist.) Donor's father collected this when he was stationed in the Philippines as an army officer in the early 1900's (before 1917).
