A profusely illustrated account of the traditional Chinese religious system, broadly defined. Topics covered include disposal of the dead (funeral rites, ideas of resurrection, the grave) and the soul and ancestral worship (the soul in philosophy and folk-conception, demonology, sorcery, the war against spectres, and the priesthood of animism). Many extracts from books and other documents are presented in the original Chinese and in English translation (This is a 1969 Taiwan reprint of the 1892-1910 original published by EJ Brill. Leyden).
