Summary
A massive survey of the history of the Liao empire (907-1125) ruled by the Ch'i-tan (Qidan) people, which for two hundred years controlled the regions of modern Manchuria, Mongolia, and the northeastern part of China proper, based on the Liao Shih (Liao Shi), the Standard History of the Liao Dynasty. This is a 1970 reprint of the 1949 original. Chapters cover an introduction to the Liao; administrative geogrpahy and population; pastoralism and agriculture; industry; communications; commerce; currency and money-lending; social organization, kinship system, customs, and traditions; powerful families and individuals; temples and monasteries; the fifnfcial system; labor service; calamities and governmental relief; rebellions; governmental organization; army and warfare; and the main events in Liao history. There are also five appendices.
