Summary
"In Chinese folklore, one regards the Phoenix, the Unicorn, the Tortoise and the Dragon as divine. In what does their divinity consist? The results of our study urges us to say that such divinity has much to do with the moon mythology of olden times. The fact is: the ancient people fancied the various moon-phases to be like the different objects of the earth, especially like human beings, trees, worms, birds, quadrupeds. This fancy also formed the concepts of the four divine animals." -- from the English-language Summary.
