Summary
Originally published in 1929, this outline of Chinese phonology contains an introduction and four sections: 1. An introduction to speech sounds (the function of human sound production; speech sounds and writing; speech sounds and geography; speech sounds over time); 2. Consonants and vowels (consonant and vowel terms; categories of consonants and their phonetic features; categories of vowels and their phonetic features; the 'four tones' and the 'five tones'); 3. Phonetic changes over time ('archaic' pronunciations in Zhou and Han dynasties; 'modern' pronunciations in the period of the Wei, Jin, Tang, and Song dynasties; the 'national language' of the Yuan and Ming dynasties and later); and 4. Phonetic writing systems (conjoining consonants and vowels; the traditional 'fanqie' system of phonetic transcription).
