Summary
This is a summary account of approaches to treatment for drug addiction in traditional Chinese medicine. The first section contains four chapters: 1. The arrival of opium in China and the history of Chinese drug prohibitions and drug treatment; 2. Opium toxicity and its symptoms; 3. The pathogenesis of opium toxicity; and 4. Medical treatment for opium toxicity. The second section has three chapters: 1. Prescriptions for acute toxicity; 2. Prescriptions for achieving abstinence; and 3. Prescriptions for recuperation after achieving abstinence. There are six appendices: 1. The resolution of the People's Congress regarding drug prohibitions; 2. The decree of the Department of Health, Chinese People's Republic; 3. The Department of Health's circular concerning strengthening the management of the approval process for medications used in drug treatment; 4. Guiding principles in commonly used methods of treatment of opioid addiction.; 5. The addiction mechanism and pharmacological action of opioids (using morphine as an example); and 6. The current state of traditional Chinese medicine's methodsof drug treatment and expert commentaries.
