Summary
This is an account of the history, architecture, and culture of the "Five Districts" region in Guangdong Province, China. The "Five Districts" (Wuyi; Ng Yap) comprise Xinhui (Sun Wui), Taishan (Toi San), Kaiping (Hoi Ping), Enping (Yan Ping), and Heshan (Hok San). This area (also known as the "Four Districts", Sze Yup, or Sze Yap) is the homeland of the vast majority of the overseas Chinese who came to the Americas in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The book has 10 chapters: 1. From the "Four Districts" to the "Five Districts"; 2. Three great scholars; 3. The adventursome emigrants to America; 4. The ancestral villages of the emigrants; 5. Western-style buildings in the countryside; 6. The watchtowers of Hoiping [Kaiping]; 7. European-style commercial towns and market squares; 8. "In villages, age holds first place" [a quote from Mengzi]; 9. A fading culture; and 10. An enduring tradition. An afterword is titles "Though scattered to the ends of the earth, all yearn for their ancestral place." Illustrated with numerous color and black-and-white photographs, maps, and drawings.
