An account of the large quasi-feudal estates maintained by the nobility in the Ming dynasty. Topics covered include: Social recovery and development in the early Ming; the nature and types of noble estates; the establishment and expansion ot the estates; their organization, and the land rents collected by them; and the influence of the estates on Ming dynasty society. Seven tables of statistical information on estates are appended, as is a list of the major sources used in the study.
