The scholar Jin Ting rui was to marry the daughter of his Uncle Mai, when the uncle back out because Jin was so poor. Jin was to marry Qiang Xian because he had retrieved the embroidered ball she had thrown to her suiters. Jin leaves the ball at the temple where he ahd gone to ask of his future and it is found by Qiang Xian's friend Qiang Chan. Jin eventually wins the honor of being first scholar in the Imperial examinations and marries both women.
