Description
Samurai Doll A: Separate head molded from wood paste and dipped in gofun. Painted features and glass eyes. Paint is cracked over right eyebrow, on bridge of nose, along right side of nose, on left side of chin, and at front base of neck and back of neck. Hair is made of black silk fiber, gathered into topknot and tied with a grey braided silk cord, short in the back; long bristly side burns, bald forehead and pate. B: Body of seated figure with hands resting above knees with curled fingers to hold a fan. Clothing: Silk brocade kimono and hakama with gold, purple, beige, yellow and rust colored patterns including dragon, cloud pattern, geometric shapes, etc. Kimono is tied at the wrists and the hakama are tucked into the leggings. Over the left shoulder is a protective sleeve and half bodice of orange, gold and white silk brocade with floral and lightning patterns and is held in place by a braided tan silk cord running from the left shoulder across the body, under the right arm and tied in front with an extended slip knot; around the edge of the protective piece is a binding of brown and orange pattered fabric; paralleling this binding is a braided tan, white and orange piping. Over this protective piece, running from the shoulder to the back of the hand is armour made up of metal plates, black and gold with raised patterns, alternating with chain mail connecting sections at the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints. The plate protecting the back of the hand has a gold embossed floral circular ornament. The chain mail at the wrist is tied to the wrist by a braided purple and white silk cord that is wrapped around the wrist several times. The right sleeve of the kimono is tied around the wrist by a red braided silk cord with fringed ends. The back of the right hand is also protected by a metal armour plate identical to that on the left hand. Around the waist of the doll is a white silk sash, wound twice around the waist and tied in a braided pattern in the front. Under the left arm, from wrist to arm pit, the protective sleeve is laced together by a white silk braided cord then is tied under the armpit in an extended braided knot. Suspended under the right shoulder blade and held by two braided red silk cords which run over the left shoulder and are tied under the right arm, is a piece of armour which protects the back right ribs. This piece of armour is cut to fit snugly under the right shoulder and extends down to the top of the right buttock. The outer surface of this piece of armour is painted black with repeat patterns of a "three comma" tomoe crest in white. Paralleling the edge of the armour plate is a strip of silk braid in orange, white and tan. Fastened to the lower end of the armour is a strip of dark orange and brown pattered fabric or leather from which hang four sections of simulated gold colored metal armour bound together by red braided silk laces. Down the sides of the armour sections ad across the center of the bottom section a purple and white braided silk cord is laced. Just above the bottom of the lowest section a brown braided lace is laced in a cross pattern. These armour sections would protect the right buttock and thigh back down to the back of the knee. The upper piece of armour is held to the body by a brown braided lace which goes around the waist and is tied in a simple knot over the left hip. On the kimono in front of the right collar bone, above the right wrist, below both hips and in front of both thighs are pairs of circular tufts of simulated fur (small silk pompoms). Fastened to the kimoo above the collar bones are two lengths of purple silk braided cords which are tied in an overhand knot below the neck in front with the fringed ends running down to the knees. Over the overhand knot a smaller purple silk cord is inserted, the two ends hanging down to the waist in front, the loop at the other end is knotted around a tuft of fringed black silk fibers. The lower knees and shins are protected by metal armour plates which have lacings of red silk braided cords. The shin plates are bound to the calves of the legs by brown silk laces wrapped around the legs. The shin plates are stitched to leg wrappings of gold, olive and brown silk brocade which has an edging of dark brown and orange patterned fabric which is paralleled by a strip of orange, white and tan silk braid. The feet are shod in leather soled shoes. Around the edge of the soles is a cord of dark brown and orange material found in other parts of the clothing. The upper surface of the shoes is simulated animal fur which has been made on a thin wood base through holes in which a coarse dark fiber has been inserted. At the front of the shoes is a small facing of gold and orange brocade. At the sides and backs of the shoes are looped straps of a gold fabric. On the top of the shoes are similar straps. Orange silk lacing is passed through the loops of these straps and wrapped around the ankles and down under the arch of the shoes to fasten the shoes on the feet. The laces are tied in bows on the top of the foot. The hands of the doll are encased in gloves of a dark brown material, possibly leather on which a family crest is printed in orange. At the neck of the kimono may be seen the collars of four under-kimonos made of off-white silk. (If this bowman were standing in position his left arm that holds the bow and his right back would be protected by armour). C: Scabbard, L: 9", made of two joined pieces of wood painted black. The two parts are fastened together by embossed metal fittings which encircle the scabbard .5", 2.5" , and 4" from the top of the scabbard and again at the end. The end fitting has openings at the sides of the scabbard and a 2" long arrow shaped metal strip running up the inner curve of the scabbard. The fittings are all gilded. The scabbard is fastened to the body by an orange braided silk cord which is tied in a bow over the right shoulder. D: Sword, L: 11" has a curved cast metal blade which has been chrome plated. Cast in the blade at its upper end, on either side, is a 1 7/8" long decoration of a dragon. Just below the sword hilt is a 1/4 " cross hatch pattern. The hilt is also at of cast metal, a flattened oval shape with four openings at the corners and a flower petal pattern in the center. The sword handle is 3.5" long. Just above the hilt is a narrow gold colored metal band. The handle is wrapped with red silk braided lacing which leaves diamond shaped patterns along the handle. The lacing passes through a hole at the upper end of the handle where it is tied. Half way up the handle, on either side of the handle, under the lacing, are embossed, gold colored metal fittings with a dragon pattern. At the end of the handle is a gold colored fitting coming 3/4" down the handle. On the fitting are incised vine patterns. Condition: Cracked gofun on face and neck, white under layer showing on chin, nose and left cheek. Gilt on sword blade is peeling. Left boot tip is chipped. Stool missing.
