Doll - Artifacts

Description
Doll representing Minamoto Yoshitsune A: Separate head molded from wood paste and dipped in gofun. Painted features and eyes, ears are separate pieces. Hair is gone and only black paint remains at the side and back. The place where the hair was attached has inset paper. B & C: Body in two pieces fitting with legs extended with the left foot slightly forward. B: Upper Body: Arms are bent slightly at the elbows with hands in front at waist level. Fingers are bent with left hand more open than right hand. Clothing: Paper mache hand protectors extend over hands - white with metal left in places. Paper mache breastplate is gold painted with plain metal horizontal bands and orange painted metal bands with an arch design. In the center is an orange painted metal medallion with a dragon design. At the top is a pierced metal piece with a repetitive four petal pattern with two large leaves and a chrysanthemum i n the center. At the shoulder are four rows of cardboard armor painted silver and laced with blue-green silk cork. At the end of the shoulder armor is a metal guard with the same design as the top of the breast - plate. At the shoulders, on top of the armor is a cloud shape pad covered in black corduroy. Around the waist is a thick cord covered with gray silk and knotted in the front. Hanging in front are three series of armour in four panels each. same as the shoulder panels with metal guards on the ends. On the left front side is a rectangle of black corduroy covered paper hanging from a strip of coarse black cotton. In the back are two of the same panels hanging from the waist. The corresponding rectangle of black corduroy is stuck on the right leg of the pants. The back of the armour above the waist is plain black paper mache. with a tan coed coming out of two holes in the upper back and tied in a knot. The armour is attached by thin cords at the shoulder. The upper robe is silk and paper fabric, green and brown brocade with gray silk lining. The underside of the sleeves is a stripe of brown and green. The paper is brown and the silk is green. There is only one white fabric inner collar. Right sleeve gray-green and beige brocade tied with brown cord. Cardboard hand protectors extend over hands. Right hand is closed as if holding something. The left side is black corduroy. Hands are painted wood and left hand fingers are only slightly bent. C: Lower Body: Wooden peg fits into the upper body. Fabric in front of pants is woven paper and fabric in beige damask weave. Back of pants is gold and light brown stripe of woven paper and fabric. Around bottom of pants is padded gray silk band. From right side of leg a knee pad is hung. Pad is black corduroy hung on black cotton fabric strip. Feet on black painted wood with blue-green toes and ends. Bottom of feet are unpainted. D: Helmet: Gold painted paper mache with seven radiating metal strips on top. In center is a metal chrysanthemum. In back on three semi-circular paper mache neck protectors held in place by blue-green silk lacing cords. There is a metal embossed visor wing on each side and decoration painted orange. Orange silk cords tie under chin. E: The orange decoration is a semi-circular band with flaring ends attached by sliding a flange into a slot at center front above visor. From center of band is metal rod with silver metal circle with lines on it and smaller gold protected circle. Number 30 written in Japanese on the back. Condition: Hair fallen off, chips out of gofun, peeling hand guard, bent armour, peeling gold paint on helmet. Sword and Fan with moon and sun design missing.
