Seattle Council Member Mike O’Brien’s Visit to YouthCAN!

By Brian.

On April 15th, 2011 Mike O’ Brien visited Youthcan to talk about his life as he went through high school, becoming a city council member, and what he did to help out the environment of Seattle.  Mr. O’ Brien told the youth many stories about himself, one being how he began to like art. His friend showed him art pieces that portrayed the consumption and waste of materials which led to negatively affecting the environment. Mike O’ Brien also gave the youth more information on a project called “Carbon Neutral” in which him and the other City Council members figure out ways to make the world more Carbon Neutral. They believe that this is important because more carbon going up into the atmosphere.

Mr. O’ Brien had a fun time visiting YouthCAN as the youths told their stories and showcased their art pieces from the exhibit.

The day also functioned as an iniviation to non-youthcanners to see what YouthCAN is about.  New youth met current youthcanners and took a look around the YouthCAN space.  They had the chance of meeting staff members such as Joshua Heim, Mario Pilapil and the youthleads as well as one of the Summer studio instuctor Jonathan Wakuda Fischer.

We are looking forward to seeing these new youths as the Summer program is around the corner!

This message was presented by the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board, please see their website for more details on how youth can qualify: http://www.hecb.wa.gov/Paying/waaidprgm/CollegeBoundScholarship.asp

The College Bound Scholarship provides hope and incentive for students and families who otherwise might not consider college as an option because of its cost.

Imitating Nature

By John

Throughout my life, I have realized that the world creates music on its own. Listening to the winds blow as if they were flutes playing a familiar tune, I begin to whistle along; starting to imitate the simple melody. Sometimes, I walk out into the park to just listen to the trees harmonize with their leaves brushing together as the birds sing their songs of delight. It’s because of this feeling that “when I hear music, I fear no danger. I am invulnerable. I see no foe. I am related to the earliest times, and the latest” (Henry David Thoreau).

I realized that through music I am able to imitate nature. Through music I can intertwine with nature. When I hear the symphony of nature creates, my mood begins to change as the music of nature changes. It’s a little funny; when I listen outside I can hear music being plated throughout nature, the minor and major cords being played through the leaves and the birds. My mood brightens up as the sun shines and as the birds wake me up with their very cute falsettos. I start to feel invincible when I hear mother earth’s music being played. It is the most amazing feeling I can have.

It’s amazing for me that I can also imitate modern media. I guess it is because I can relate to the music and to make it better, you are able to control what you want to imitate and you can innovate parts of it. When in nature, you can change the mood of the music to the mood you want. One thing that I would love everyone to do is to walk out and just listen to nature.

I have simple a question to ask, for me I feel invulnerable listening to music within nature, so what do you imitate that makes you feel invulnerable?

Environmental Leadership-Coucilmember O’Brien

On April 15th, Councilmember Mike O’ Brien will be making a guest appearance to speak with the youths of YouthCAN. He will be discussing on what inspired him to take leadership on the environment. It’s all part of his Leadership Project. Here is a brief history of Mike O’ Brien and some of his work:

He was born and raised in the Seattle area of Washington State. After earning his economics degree from Duke University and a MBA from the University of Washington, he spent his professional career working in financial management. He served for 10 years as the chief financial officer at local firm, Stokes Lawrence, where he oversaw budget, financial reporting and forecasting. At this time, he helped out with the environmental issues that were going on through the Sierra Club. At the club he assumed role of chairman and used his leadership and knowledge to help Seattle’s environment and ultimately helped make the city an eco-friendly example for the rest of the nation.

Carbon neutrality is one of the main aspects of the environment that Mike helps raise awareness for. He helped in the creation of many events such as a Global Climate work. He and the rest of the city council came up with a Zero Waste strategy that took effect a couple years ago. Strategies are being used to help out the environment like the disposal of unwanted phone books and finding ways to dispose of constructional and demolition waste.

In addition to his committee work he is focusing on:

-Exploring a carbon neutral Seattle

-Empowering communities to get involved in government

-Participating in the Race and Social Justice Initiative

ART, HIGH SCHOOL and the ENVIRONMENT?

The YouthCAN Summer Cultural Arts Experience is all about the environment this summer. In fact, this summer begins a three year initiative on what we’re calling environmental heritage.

What is environmental heritage? Simply put, environmental heritage is the historic relationship between people and the land. An untold story about Northwest environmental hertiage is the contributions made by Japanese immigrants over 100 years ago.  Did you know that the labor force that built the railroad that runs underneath Stevens Pass was primarly of Japanese discent? This begs the question: when we look East and to the Cascade Mountains, are we looking at a Japanese landscape? This is one of the questions we’ll take up this summer.

But you may ask yourself: What does environmental heritage matter to me? Come by the Wing Luke Museum on Friday, April 15th at 3:30PM to hear Seattle City Council Member Mike O’Brien talk about how his high school experience led to him to take leadership on environmental issues and how you can too!
