EARTHWORKS: The 2011 YouthCAN Summer Cultural Arts Experience

Tuesday, July 5th – Saturday, August 6th

Apply by April 29th

Click here for the 2011 Summer YouthCAN Application

Have you ever thought about the connection between art and the environment? Does Japanese Heritage interest you? Are you in high school? If you answer “yes” to these questions, then YouthCAN is where you ought to be this summer, at no cost!

The award winning YouthCAN program is seeking 12 high school students for the 2011 Summer Cultural Arts Experience. This summer we will explore Earthworks – or the economic forces that shape the landscape around us.

There will be three (3) Summer Studios that span different art forms and inspirations. The first two are located at Wing Luke Museum and the third will be located off-site – at both a music studio and in the mountains through a camping trip. These include:

88 Views of Opportunity

Graffiti inspired Ukiyo-e print-making with Jonathan Wakuda Fisher

Tuesday, July 5th – Friday, July 15th | 10:30AM – 4:30PM

Based on historic documents about 88 immigrants who made the journey from Japan to the Pacific Northwest to build the railroad through the North Cascade Mountains, students will create 88 landscapes that speak to the forces that pushed and pulled these men from their homeland to the labor camps at Stevens Pass. Why did they make the journey?

The Poetics of Hard Love

Japanese poetry and watercolor illustration with Mugi Takei

Tuesday, July 19th – Friday, July 29th | 10:30AM – 4:30PM

Inspired by stories of Japanese Picture Brides and the men they came to marry, student will learn how to read, write and illustrate the experience of hard love at the turn of the last century. How did Japanese men – like the 88 immigrants who came to work at Stevens Pass – fall in love with their would-be wives through pictures?

SoundTracks, Parts I & II

Music and sound composition with Paul Kikuchi

Part I: Monday, August 1 st – Friday, August 5th | 10:30AM – 4:30PM

Part II: Monday, August 22nd – Friday, August26th | Location to be determined

Taking our cue from the places where 88 Japanese immigrants lived and worked in the North Cascade Mountains, students will compose original sound scapes specific to the daily journeys of these men both in studio (Part 1) and on location through a camping trip (Part II). How did these tracks sound 100 years ago?

Applications are due by Friday, April 29.

The first ten applications get a free pass to the first JamFest in May.

See you this summer!

New Storefronts Coming in April!

Storefronts Seattle is proud to announce the launch of nine new site-specific, world-premiere projects in storefront spaces in downtown Seattle.

Storefronts debuted in late 2010 as an experiment in activating vacant spaces with art, creative enterprise, and performance. Since that time, this incredibly successful program has presented over 25 artists and groups in short-term residencies in Chinatown /
International District and Pioneer Square.

Storefronts is dedicated to providing exposure and support to Seattle area artists, and to revitalizing our urban core. We use the arts and creative enterprise to help protect neighborhoods from the growing darkness of high vacancy rates, reduced street traffic,
and a disengaged streetscape. We activate the neighborhood and we help to bring vibrancy to the urban environment. We join with long-term area businesses in staking a claim for community and for neighborhood.

The Storefronts Seattle project is a collaboration of The Alliance for Pioneer Square, City of Seattle’s Department of Planning and  Development, City of Seattle’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, 4Culture, Chinatown-International District Business Improvement Area, Seattle Chinatown-International District Preservation and Development Authority, Seattle’s Office of Economic Development, and Shunpike.

This month Storefronts is proud to join with new artists, in new spaces, as we present nine new works. Each of these will by open by April 7, First Thursday. This round of installations includes:

The Poster Museum
Romson Bustillo
Alyson Piskorowski
The New Mystics
Elizabeth Gahan
John Fleming
Cassie Hibbert
Kristin Tollefson
Ben Hirschkoff

Artists 4 Japan!!!

Artists 4 Japan
Art Sale to Benefit Relief Efforts in Japan

March 26, 12pm – 8pm
Sunday, March 27, 12pm – 5 pm

KOBO at HIGO
604South Jackson Street
Seattle, WA 98104

info@Koboseattle.com
www.Koboseattle.com

About this event
A number of Seattle artists with connections to Japan had the same idea at the same time. What can we do to aid recovery efforts from the devastation from last week’s earthquake and tsunami? The greatest asset we have to contribute is our work, and with your help, we can convert that artwork into the most versatile asset – money to support relief efforts.

All the artwork – paintings, drawings, calligraphy, sumi-e, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, prints, and more – has been donated. No commissions are being paid, and all the hard costs for the event have been donated.

How it Works
This event is offered in the spirit of generosity and trust. Instead of purchasing the artwork, guests will have the opportunity to make a donation in the amount of that “price” directly to the International Red Cross in exchange for the work. Donations can be made by only by credit card or check. (Some employers will match your donations, check your company policies on matching donations.) Everybody wins.

The Murakami Family (Higo Variety Store) will also match up to $10,000 in donations raised.
