2003.500.1011 DVD Maria Tallchief and her sister Marjorie came from the Osage Nation in Oklahoma, and as children trained as both pianists and dancers. Marjorie began a ballet career in Europe, and Maria became America's first home-grown prima ballerina. As her career flourished, her partnership with George Balanchine coincided with the founding of the New York City Ballet, and of a new style of dance and dancer. This documentary, using interviews and archival dance footage, looks at her life and career, at how her heritage informed her dancing, and at what it means to be "a Balanchine dancer." 2003.500.1048 Book Stella Dong's biography of Shanghai explains precisely why a missionary once declared, "If God lets Shanghai endure, he owes an apology to Sodom and Gomorrah." The greatest metropolis in Asia during its heyday - from the turn of the nineteenth century until Mao's army swept away its decadence in 1949 - this corrupt, pleasure mad, and squalor-ridden city combined the exuberant vulgarity of Rio during Mardi Gras with a Wild West lawlessness." "Dong chronicles how a wilderness of swamps was transformed into a dazzling, modern-day Babylon. The sickly sweet smell of opium permeated every lane and side street, and in its myriad fleshpots labored a tragic army of prostitutes and "taxi dancers." Seductive and cruel, Shanghai was no place for the innocent: a powerful criminal underworld controlled the port in league with the city's wealthiest citizens and military satraps. Along with its predatory climate, Shanghai was the most turbulent spot in the Orient, for war, rebellion, and economic disaster were never far from its door. 2 copies: one hardcover, one paperback Shanghai: The Rise and Fall of a Decadent City Dong, Stella 2000 William Morrow and Company, Inc.

2003.500.1121 Book In Ed Young's childhood home in Shanghai, all was not as it seemed: a rocking chair became a horse; a roof became a roller rink; an empty swimming pool became a place for riding scooters and bikes. The house his father built transformed as needed into a place to play hide-and-seek, to eat bamboo shoots, and to be safe. For outside the home's walls, China was at war. Soon the house held not only Ed and his four siblings but also friends, relatives, and even strangers who became family. The war grew closer, and Ed watched as planes flew overhead and friends joined the Chinese air force. But through it all, Ed's childhood remained full of joy and imagination.
